Never Had It So Good...?

I have finally got round to spend time looking at a book I bought sometime ago (too much time playing with PE3) - “South With Endurance”. It features the work of photographer Frank Hurley on Shackleton’s fated 1914 – 1917 Antarctic expedition.

The book has large prints from cover to cover that are spectacular and quite incredible given the weather conditions and the circumstances that befell the crew…

Also, it contains a brief biography of Hurley and an insight into the issues he faced on the trip. It shows that 90 years ago Hurley faced some similar dilemmas that we do today…

Do I go digital or stay with film? – Hurley had to decide whether to use glass plate negatives (the technology of the day) or go with that new fangled invention - roll film…

Darn forgot the tripod, can I hold the camera still enough? – Hurley’s problem was also how to stop his hands freezing to the metal body of the camera…

Just how do I get a good colour match with my new printer? Hurley grappled with developing glass plate negatives in appalling Antarctic conditions…

After reading how the ship sank, taking Hurley's stock of glass plate negatives with it - a full memory card and no PC World in sight doesn’t seem quite the same crisis any more!!
