Font Selection Process

I would be interested in some general discussion about how one chooses a font(s) for their projects. I realize this is highly subjective. Also, perhaps list two or three of your favorite all purpose fonts. I'm aware of some issues such as the difference between Serif and Sans serif and the combining on the same page, etc. I hope this doesn't seem to vague, but with so many choices I sometimes find it hard to pick. Just interested in how some of you narrow down the choice. Thanks

Great topic for discussion! And you're right, it's highly subjective. When it comes to fonts, I tend to believe that "less is more" and keep things simple and clean. I've seen some great projects ruined by overly elaborate or "fussy" fonts. (By the way, I love artsy and unusual fonts, so I have to be careful!) But in the rare instances when an elaborate font is called for, it can really add to the mood or theme of the project.

There are so may choices, so it's easy to become overwhelmed when selecting a font. Whatever you choose, just don't let the font steal the focus from your image or artwork. Make it work for you rather than the other way around.

Let's hear what others have to say!

Fonts are something that facinate me and I have to admit that I have way too many .... The funny thing is that when I look at a selection of my images I don't actually use most of the fonts. The ones I do tend to use are:

Apple Chancery
Aristocrat Let
Fairfax Station
Nottingham

I do use others but usually just for the occasional image .... It will interesting to see what other people use

I have a jillion and can't resist getting "just one more". I use very few in most of my work though. If I am going to use certain Text Effects I pick a font that works best with the effect that I choose. Example" embossed text needs a wider very uncomplicated font.

Arial
Bodoni
Comic Sans
Scriptina
Garamond

Mary ....

Not sure if this thread was a good idea ... as I have now downloaded two more fonts

I couldn't resist looking at your favourites ... and one thing just seemed to lead to another

I think we awakened a monster! There is one more font I am going to acquire for sure and that is my own handwriting. It costs about $10 to have done and it is on my wish list.
