PSE 11 & Actions

I have just purchased PSE 11. I use actions A LOT! I love that actions are so easy to load in PSE 11, but I have over 300 actions and I can't seem to find a way to sort them. In PSE 10, you could at least pull up the main title name to find an action within that title, but now I have to scroll through every action to find the one I want. Also, I used to be able to add them to my "favorites" folder. I can't seem to find a way to do this either. Does ANYONE know of a way to organize actions better within PSE 11. I love some of the new tweaks in PSE 11, but I am sure frustrated with lack of organization for the actions! HELP!

There are now two ways to add actions in PSE11 - the old way which added them into Photo Effects (now just Effects) and is complicated by thumbnails and xml files and having to recreate the database - but you can still do things that way which does allow for some grouping.

The new way using the action panel is a lot easier. The issue you are running into though is that in the old method actions (created in full Photoshop) had to be single actions but in the new action panel you can have a number of different actions within in action set which gives you a way of grouping together actions (and you can expand a set of actions in the action panel). The problem is that, as far as I know, you need full Photoshop to create an action set out of a number of individual actions so unless you can borrow use of full Photoshop or download the trial you can't do it.

You could in fact load action sets in PSE10 - it was in Guided Edit (The Action Player). PSE11 however makes it a bit more obvious with the action panel but it works much the same way.

Didn't think of that!

Picture me slapping myself on the forehead! I didn't even think to try putting them in the old fashioned way! It worked and now I am all organized again. Thank you so much! Now I don't have to give up on PSE 11.

You're welcome and glad you got it to work the way you want and don't need to give up on PSE11. So just to confuse the issue further there is yet another way in PSE11 - the preset manager lets you now load Effects (which are just actions) but unfortunately doesn't let you save them as a new set of Effects which would be the ideal way to add and group actions - they all go into one set called My Effects.

BTW if you have extra layer styles PSE11 has made it easier to add those too and have also added them to the preset manager. Again the downside is that you can't group them by saving as a set. Seems like Adobe has cracked open the window to handling add-ons more easily and closer to the way it can be done in full Photoshop but, as with many other areas, have limited the functionality so if you get hooked there's still an incentive to upgrade to the full version.

PSE11 Actions

Tony-
I have a few questions regarding "actions" in PSE11. I am just beginning to get into actions (I thought I had to do everything myself so this is very exciting!), however I am uncertain what works with what. Specifically Pioneer Woman's actions...are you familiar? Her website doesn't have PSE11 listed so I am not certain if it is compatible, wherein she has previous PSEs listed. Or - do you know if PSE11 has the ability to do these actions without purchasing elsewhere (i.e. Paint the Moon's Luminosity- Essence & Artisan which costs $230). Any help would be great!!
Thanks in advance

I can't say for sure but I'm almost certain that anything that worked in earlier versions will work in PSE11. From what I've seen so far PSE11 will handle more CS5 commands than earlier PSE versions so I don't think you'd have a problem.

$250 for an action. Unbelievable ...

Hi Sara,

Rita at The CoffeeShop has probably the largest selection of great free actions for Photoshop Elements. Any actions you find for older versions of Elements should work in PSE11.

Here are some more pages with some freebies (some may require you to "like" on Facebook):

http://www.lakshalperera.com/2012/03...tion-a-plenty/ (several of these Photoshop actions work in Elements. Look at the steps of an action & if it contains features Elements doesn't have, such as Curves, it won't work.)
