Unselect a tool

This will sound REALLY STUPID, but how do I unselect a tool without selecting a different one? Example: I choose the crop tool, and I crop (or not). Either way the crop tool is still selected even though I don't wish to do more cropping. Given my inept use of mice, I frequently wind up clicking on the image again with the crop tool active and have to be careful not to muck it up.

I know I can undo, but I'd rather not accidentally DO in the first place.

Thanx for any suggies.

Maybe there is someone out there with a different answer, but it has been my experience that you have to select another tool to deselect the one currently selected.

In these instances, the general consensus seems to be to "park" the selection on the Move Tool (keyboard shortcut V) or the Hand Tool (keyboard shortcut H) to avoid the type of thing that you are referring to.

Hi j831526, welcome aboard!

One tool always has to be selected. The best thing is to make a habit of selecting a "safer" tool such as the Zoom or the Hand tool. Just note -- when you open the Editor, PSE will activate whichever tool you were using before you closed the program.

6 years ago we started a thread called Photoshop Elements Secrets - if you go to about post #116 you'll find the beginning of a discussion on which tool we like to 'park' on. Wendy prefers the crop tool, I'm a zoom tool parker and so on! I find the safest way is to use the keyboard shortcuts as soon as you've finished with the current tool - so V will switch to the move tool, Z to the zoom tool etc., and then you won't accidentally crop something.

I don't "park" - I have never found an issue with dealing with whatever tool happens to be "active."

However, if I were to "park", I'd choose the move tool.

I am always on the move, I mean, I park on the Move tool.
