Question Question about Entry-Challenge 154

Hi-
In Tom Murray's entry, he has made the carousel horse look as if it's made of sterling silver-it looks just beautiful. I assume there was some de-sat involved, but it has a silver patina as well. Any idea how this is done? I'm intrigued!

Hi Carol ...

I have asked the same question ... it looks so good. Just hoping now that Tom spots the question and lets us know which technique he used

Carol - have you ever found out how he did the silver effect? I just love that and would like to know how he did it too.

Hi there ...

I'm beginning to wonder if Tom is away for a few days .... as I haven't seen him on the forum and usually he answers Challenge queries pretty quickly ..

Wouldn't want to second guess the way Tom did this one but I do recall that for an earlier challenge (#149) he used the "Instant Metal Using Curves" technique from How to Cheat in Photoshop. In the adobe forum he posted a picture of what the curves looked like (certainly not your usual curves ).

Hi Tony ...

I had a feeling that Tom had posted info on how he did the technique the other week ... but I couldn't track it down. Of course I forgot it was from How to Cheat ... or I would have looked it up.

I just quickly tried it and do think it probably was the way he did it ...

I desaturated the image and then applied a curve to it ... here is the result and I have added the curve too ...

Wendy- that's really cool. I love the effect. I tried using a wow chrome and it does not preserve the detail. This method does quite well. I definitely need to check out that book.

Hi Nancy ...

It is quite good book .. I have version 2 but I think that version 3 is the current one.

It is written for Photoshop but if you have Grant's tools then a lot of it is do able with workarounds

Can't the same effect be obtained by using a Gradient Map of a Chrome metal ? For those who don't have the Curves.

I have a Metal group in my gradient maps, though I can't tell if it's Adobe's supplied or something I got from the web.
