organizer edit ?

I just started playing around in organizer and i imported a few folders to see how it works. So , i got it in to organizer, then opened a picture. I did a little editing on it from the full edit screen and then saved it as a copy with a new name in Tiff format. When i went back to organizer, it just showed as a broken folder. I tried it again and saved it as .psd and it seems to show in organizer now. is this normal? why wouldnt it show tiff format? I imported a folder that has some raw files in it, and those show fine. Am i doing something wrong?

Next question, if the file is jpeg and i want to edit it, should i save it as another file type first such as tiff or psd and then open that file, ir does it matter if i edit the jpeg version and then save it as tiff or psd when i'm done editing?

Thanks,
Erik

You get a "broken" icon if you moved or renamed or deleted the file in WIndows. It has nothing to do with the fact that it was a .tif. For photos in your organizer, you have to use Organizer commands to manage the photo, not Windows methods.

You can open a .jpg in the editor, there is no problem doing this, then save as either .tif, .psd or .jpg, your choice. There is no point in first creating a tif or .psd before editing. It is just a waste of time.

If you are just starting to use Organizer I suggest you spend some time on www.photofanatic.com. Although based on version 3 so details will be different, it will give you a good idea of how Organizer was designed to work.

DJ,
The problem i seem to have is when i open a picture from the organizer to edit it and then after i'm done editing it, I'll save it as a tiff file. Then when i go back to the organizer, the original picture is there and then next to it will show the broken symblo for that picture. But, here's the thing that's confusing me. If i click on that broken symbol, it will open the edited image. Make any sense?

It makes sense to a certain extent, sounds like maybe your thumbnails are corrupted somehow. Here are some tips for uncorrupting them. http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/...zer_thumbnails

i still seem to be having this same problem. I looked at that page that DJ sent me and i tried repairing the catalog and then optimizing but it's still not working right. I've even tried opening a jpg file and then >save as>tiff
and then when i go back into Organizer that new file shows up as a broken icon. But if i right click on it to open it in full edit, or just open it from the full edit screen , it shows.. i've tried all the other file types and they seem to work fine and show up in organizer. Why wouldnt .tiff?

Erik

I'm running out of ideas, so I will throw out some wild guesses now.

You keep spelling it as "tiff", and that doesn't matter here in the forums, but if you save a file with a name ending in .tiff, that could be a problem, it should end with .tif.

Also, please make sure there are no periods in the file name except just before .tif. If there is another period in the file name, you could get this problem.

No. That's a good guess but I
just choosing "tif" from the drop down box of file types to "save as" so that's not a possibilty. Thanks for the try though. The thing is , the file isn't bad that's being created as " tif". It just shows the broken icon in organizer but it will open I editor and show that it is a "tif" file. I guess I could live with that, but I know it's not right.

Try the remaining steps (4 and 5) in the FAQ that Paige referenced:

Two more thoughts:

1. What is the pixel height and width of a problem photo? There are different limits that apply to different file types. Given that you could save as a PSD, this probably doesn't apply here, but let's check just in case.

2. Upload one of the problem files to www.pixentral.com (free) and reply with the URL here. Then we can see if the problem occurrs on our PSE. You may have to save a small, cropped photo to get under the Pixentral file-size limits.
