opening tiff files

I use an epson v700 and vuescan to scan my medium format film transparencies. I use mac elements 6.

Recently I'm having trouble opening some scanned files to edit that I've saved as tiff files. In elements my newer tiff files (not older scans) are grayed over and won't let me open them. Why? Somewhere along the line I think I've changed settings and don't know what I've done!

Is it anything to do with the 'enable' and 'format' options that come up when I do 'file' then 'open' options? Don't think it used to have 'photoshop raw' as the default??!!

It's always defaulted to photoshop raw. Don't pay attention to that, just double click a tiff in the list and wait a minute or two.

Still can't open the tiff file (grayed out) , but I now think this is to do with the file size.

For comparison, I scanned a 6x7 medium format film transparency at the same vuescan setting that I use to create an archive 'master scan' that I then work from, scale etc. This file was 293 mb and opened ok in elements 6.

The file I'm having problems with is a 6x17 medium format panoramic transparency, nearly x3 the size of the 6x7, somewhere around 800mb I reckon (can't tell from mac 'preview' as it crashes when I try to open it...!)

Is there a file size limit for editing files in elements 6?

Any suggestions?

When you go to open the TIFFs, are you opening them in camera raw?
