Some Keyboard shortcuts for PSE 8 don't work

Hi,

I recently upgraded to PSE 8 on my mid 2007 iMac, I also upgraded to snow leopard. There are several keyboard shortcuts That either don't work ( left bracket to decrease brush size) or it's wrong i.e., option key on the the straighten tool gives me an eyedropper not able to straighten from vertical plane. There are a few more in camera raw.

Searched around and had no luck. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Toni

Hi Toni-

I'm not sure about the bracket key...I'm presently on a Windows Vista machine, and it works fine...does the right bracket key still make the brush larger? If so, try resetting the preferences. Close Elements, launch it again, and immediately hold down Option-Command-Shift.

As for the Straighten tool, try this:

- Start drawing with the Straighten tool by itself, and then press and hold Command and continue drawing. If you hold down Command before starting to draw, the Straighten tool will temporarily switch to the Move tool. Holding down Option will temporarily switch to the Eyedropper, as you discovered.

Hope that helps, and I hope resetting the preferences takes care of the bracket/brush problem...

Which Camera RAW ones are giving you problems?

Mike

Hi Toni ...

... and welcome to the Village

Have you downloaded the Help PDF that may help you ... as some of the Mac Shortcuts are slightly different.

Do try deleting the prefs as certainly the bracket keys should work, they are working on mine in Snow Leopard.

Another thought is that maybe you have something else on your computer which is taking cover some of the key shortcuts.

some work-arounds worked

well, I see I'm not the only one up @ all hrs. The straightening tool now works by following Mikes suggestion - If I hold left mouse then hold command I can straighten using a vertical line (solved)

I tried holding shift, option, command no change in the brush size behavior.
The ' ] ' enlarges the brush but the left bracket doesn't and I just noticed the left bracket does not print to screen. BUT, the shift left bracket changes the feather (hard/soft) of the brush and it prints a curly brace.

Time to call applecare (hope it is still in effect) -- It's strange, I had pse 4, 4.01, 6 and now 8 & I don't remember the straighten tool working that way.

I should've picked up on the defective key (hope it's not the mother board!!)

Thanks for your help,

Toni

It's more likely to be the keyboard than the motherboard. When you say they print to screen, do you mean you've tried typing them in Text Edit? It's always worth trying these things away from the program you're having problems with.

Some of the brushes in PSE 8 just don't respond to the keystrokes. I don't know why. Have you tried this with different brushes to see if any of them work?

Problem resolved

I did what I should've instead of panicking!

I did SAFE BOOT (hold shift after the start-up sound) and this did the trick. Safe mode(SM) eliminates some apps in start-up and it worked as advertised.

I came out of safe mode and it still works. I've eliminated the apps that were removed in SM and lookin good for now.

Thanks again for the help

Toni

Hi David - went to text edit to see if i was a defective key since it wouldn't print " [ " and would print "{" I headed toward software conflict. I didn't do my usual trouble shooting protocol.

Thanks for the suggestion
