Black to Transparent Gradient Map
I have been trying for some time now to generate a black to transparent gradient map. The gradient editor shows a black to transparent scale; however when call on the result is a black to white gradient. Am I trying something that E3 will not do? If not what did I not do or did wrong?

There are so many ways; I'll give you one. First be sure to click keyboard D. This will give you black over white in the color picker fg/bg tools palette. Second go to layer>new fill layer>gradient, click OK. Now, you will see a Black to transparent gradient layer. Adjust the angle to what you need and click OK. What is nice about adjustment layers is that you can tweak and readjust at any time. If you want to change the angle/color etc...just double click on the adjustment layer and all the options will come back up. That is just one way.

Thanks Jodi for you answer. I tried your suggestion and got a gradient. However my problem is with producing a transparent gradient map, not a gradient.

The way to do it then is to go ahead and create the gradient map adjustment layer...set keyboard D first. Then, since it a mask use the 'gradien tool '( select black to transparent) then drag the gradient accross the gradient map mask. This will make it black to transparent.

Thanks MikeH for the tutorial reference (in the second reply of this post). It provided the information that allowed me to generate a grayscale mask. The grayscale mask was my final objective. I wanted the mask to blend exposure bracketed images; [brighter shadows with darker sky’s ].
