Jerky Playback! Ugh!

Hi, I just can't seem to get this going. I continue to have jerky and even frozen playback. I have closed all pgms, and even changed the task manager to eliminate almost extraneous running on the computer. I had a pro help me with this also.

(My hardware is Pentium 4, 2.53GHz, 1.50 RAM, Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.)

Still no luck! My files are not abnormally large-- some from a DV tape and some even smaller, from a flash memory card.

So, now what can I try?

video needs to have the drives defragged constantly.( this may be already known by you, but a reminder) Try starting there.

Check your drives for fragmentation. Also what type of video card do you have? This is probably a silly question but have you rendered your project? (is there a redline above the timeline)
Oh, one other thing have you played this project before with no problems?

I have defrag'd. I have plenty of HD space also. I have a few entries for the video cards: WDM Video for Windos Capture Driver (Win 32). I have SxVCap, WDM Video Capture, Provider: Conexant, and Legacy Video Capture Device. I hope this is the data you need!

I cant' figure out why this is happening. Do you think I have to return to PE 1?

Hi Lyn - there are some pretty specific requirements for your video card to run PE 2 - do those match your machine? Tami was able to give help on this in a previous post - maybe she will come along and help you sort that part out.

Does you computer have directx 9?

Also have you done other projects without any problems? I'm trying to ask as many questions as I can as it is hard to troubleshoot from long distance Please understand I'm not trying to be a pain just collect info

Also check this info and see if any of this applies to you.

There are several reasons your timeline may not play smoothly, most of which can be resolved by rendering.

On the other hand, if you're finding that even your standard, uneffected clips are not playing back smoothly on your timeline, you may be able to improve the playback by disabling the timeline scrolling feature. (Go to Edit, then Preferences, then General and set your timeline playback to No Scroll.)

By default, the timeline in Premiere Elements 2.0 scrolls from right to left as you play your video project so that your CTI is never off screen. However, this feature can be very taxing for even more powerful systems and disabling it can often make for a much more smooth playback.

Ok, first of all thank so much for your help. Secondly, ask as many questions as possible. I have answers now to all of them. My computer does meet the requirements listed. I did install Directx 9. That did not help.

I have not been able to make any projects yet on PE2. I was using PE1, and just got my PE2.

I have disabled the scrolling timeline. That helped some with the slide shows, but once I got to a video clip, no.

I have also tried unistalling/reinstalling. I have double checked all my computer specs, and everything seems to be in order. I just can't figure out why it continues to not play back well!

Doh... I'm braindead, you listed RAM...I haven't had enough coffee yet

Let me check with a couple of people so I can see if we can help figure this out.

Just another quick check..you don't have a redline across the top of your timeline do you?

Have you tried uninstalling PE 1 and 2 and then installing just 2? Or possibly have another video editing program that may interfere with it? You may have to uninstall it. I can run PE 2 fine and then when I put Premiere pro on,cannot make Pro run smooth or PE 2. May be the DLL file or something that both use and need to switch programs. But I have Premiere 6.01 with a DV500 card and that runs fine. You might have to fiddle with things abit.(again you may have tried these things....just a thought)
