365 Photo Blogs - A Primer
Some of you have seen the buzz that Clara (bamagirl) started HERE about the 365 Photos in 2009 Challenge and perhaps you've been tempted to jump in but didn't know how. This post is intended to provide a quick description of the challenge and as well as some basic information to get you started.
The Challenge The idea of the challenge is to take (and post) 365 photos during the course of the new year, each satisfying a theme from THIS LIST and following these GUIDELINES. As you can see, the themes are pretty open to creative interpretation and we've also included 52 Make Your Own Theme options, in case you get stuck on some of the themes. The project is meant to encourage us to get out taking photos and to learn new skills along the way. There are no winners or losers - if you must measure your success, do so by how you grow as a photographer and by the blogging friendships you develop. One of the best parts of being in the challenge is that it creates a built-in blogging community - you'll get a lot of feedback on your photos and learn from other participants' posted work. The Blogging Each participant will post their own photos on a photo blog or other suitable site. For some, this will present a *bit* of a learning curve, but becoming an experienced blogger is one of the greatest side-benefits. The most popular blog hosts are Blogger.com (sometimes known as Blogspot.com) and Wordpress.com. Both are free. With these blog hosts, there is a good bit of flexibility in the appearance of your blog. It can take a bit of time to set up your blog, but once you have it the way you like it, posting the images through the year is a breeze. Feel free to copy the Theme List and Guidelines from the links above. See the post below for the CURRENT LIST OF PARTICIPANTS. So, those are the basics. I will add some links to more help later... IF YOU WANT TO START A BLOG AND NEED HELP WITH THE PARTICULARS, PLEASE POST QUESTIONS IN THE ORIGINAL THREAD HERE - YOU'LL BE MORE LIKELY TO GET ANSWERS THERE. Some Additional Info and Links
Kim (kroberts) has kindly re-formatted this theme list so that it fits on a single page printed back-to-back. Find the link HERE.
Clustrmaps is a small add-on that shows where in the world your blog's visitors are from. Kimmerbean made a terrific 365 Photos logo that she has kindly offered for us to use on our blogs. Find it HERE. Last edited by JulieM; January 6th, 2009 at 07:50 PM. Reason: changed link for Kim's list |

Adding a Watermark
Several of you have asked me how I've put a watermark on the larger version of an image, but left it off the smaller one on the blog page, like this example.
It's really quite simple. Here's what I do: (NOTE: I use WordPress. I'm guessing something similiar could be done in Blogger as well). Step 1: Upload your un-watermarked image (I usually upload an image between 700-800 px at its largest dimension and bewteen 72-96 ppi). The particular theme I use resizes it to 450 px wide max. Step 2: In the upload window (right after it's done "Crunching" in WordPress), hit the button "File URL" in the Link URL area. This will point to the file when a viewer clicks the thumbnail on the blog page. IMPORTANT: Here's Key #1. In a few minutes you're going to upload a second, watermarked version of your image. Figure out what you're going to call it now. It'll save you from coming back to this screen later. For example, I name my images like this: YYMMDD_Theme#-ThemeName.jpg. This becomes the last part of my Link URL. I name my watermarked images YYMMDD_Theme#wm.jpg. Keep that in mind, and go to Step 3... Step 3: In the Link URL field, erase the part of the link containing the original file name, and replace it with the filename of your watermarked link. EXAMPLE: My Original URL: http://amomentago.wordpress.com/file..._239-power.jpg I Change Link URL To: http://amomentago.files.wordpress.co...0211_239wm.jpg Step 4: Finish up your post, and either Publish or Schedule it to be published later. Then, click Media>Add New on the right side of the page Step 5: Upload your watermarked verison. Step 6: Test it out and make sure it works! Let me know if something doesn't work. I haven't had time to proofread! Mike |

I thought an alphabetized list of our Made Up Themes might help so with Julie's permission I am posting it here. Please PM me with any new themes that you think of or see on the blogs and I will add them. There are no numbers on this list as it will be easier to keep alphabetized without them.
As of 8/29/09 we have 168 themes on the list. 365 Photo Blogs A Primer
In todays selection I tried to submit a comment, but I keep getting an error page. I really enjoyed one of the photos and tried to compliment it. If we are not allowed to comment its a pity that a few ruin it for those of us who are serious about what we do.
