What is an ICC profile?

In the save options window for edited images there is an "option" for colour ......ICC profile.

Would you please explain what this is and tell me the advantages of checking or not checking this option as opposed to not checking the box before I save an edited image.

Thanks for your help.

ICC stands for International Color Consortium, the organization that sets color management standards.

This can explain it better than I can:

I would recommend running Adobe Gamma, in the Control Panel, to create a profile. This is on a PC. Macs use a different method to adjust color. Anyway, for me it really helped my monitor show colors better. Note, you need to have the Adobe Gamma Loader in your Start folder so it runs when you start your computer.

Including a profile when you save images only adds about 3K to the file size, according to PSE3 for Dummies, although I am not sure if all devices, printers, web browsers, etc. can read the profile. I plan to upload my tiffs to Ritz Camera, so I guess we'll see how the prints turn out.

Someone with more expertise can perhaps give you a more informed opinion. I include the profile in my saved tiffs. But I am still learning the program and about digital imaging in general, so I am not really sure if it's the right thing to do.

Something you do need to bear in mind is that the article was written for Photoshop ... so when you get to the parts about converting existing profiles in images then PSE cannot do that.
