Smile Old Tut for painted effect

Here is another old tut by WESTIE MOM aka Anita
I am posting this for some of our new memebers who have not been able to enjoy all the fun we had with this tut. Here we go.

Painted Effect

1. open your photo and duplicate the layer
2. Run high pass filter ( filter, other high pass) about 3
3. Set blend mode to hard light
4. Combine the layers ( Shift/Ctrl/Alt/E) Edited by adding Ctrl , sorry if this was the confusion.

5. Filter-Stylize-Diffuse- choose Anisotropic-
you can do this twice. You want to get a liquidy , smooth , painted look.

6. Unsharp mask 150/.3/0

7. Smart Blur 3/12/ High

you can increase the contrast if needed

Anita said " after playing with some different size images, I have discovered that the effect works best with images that are 800 to 1200 pixels on the long side."

Another great look for photos
Have fun

Gave This Tut A Try

I gave this tut a try on a photograph that I took in 1998 with my first digital camera. It was the kind that took many photographs on a 3.5 inch floppy disk so you can image how tiny the file was. The photo was 480 x 640 so it is a bit smaller than the optimal resolution mentioned for the tut.

I am still working on figuring out the best way to post images, and have decided for now to use my flickr account.

I am posting a small image, and also a link to a larger version...

The small version can be found here...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/...79d1ced9_m.jpg

And if you like what you see, the larger version can be found here..

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/...40fbb29b_o.jpg

I have yet to figure out the best way to host images so I can count on them being seen with the thread long term.. And there is an image attached to this that doesn't really do what I want it to do, and I can't quite figure out how to get rid of it... so please be patient with me as I learn the ins and outs of how to show my work on the forum.

This is probably the most embarassing post I have done yet!! I have tried this tut 6 different times on 4 different pics and I can't get it right. I even went back and looked at Anita's original post. I really need HELP on this one. (Please don't show this to anyone!!)

wow, lets see if we can figuer out what you are dong wrong. I will take a look at the steps and see if I can figure out why it turned out so dark. Just take it step by step and do each thing in order. I will take a look and see if I can figure it out.

Make sure after you run the high pass filter set the blend mode to hard light not Hard mix. Hard mix will make your picture very dark.
