Warning Message PRINT IMAGE MATCHING when Selecting to Edit

When I select my image for editing from the Organizer, I get a warning message that says " Your selection includes photo(s) with PRINT IMAGE MATCHING (P.I.M.) and/or Exit Print data that provides enhanced printing to Epson printers. This data will be altered if the photo(s) are edited."

How will editing affect the prints? I am using a Kodak CX 7330 , picture quality set at "Best - 3.1 M pixels". Will editing affect prints I order through a Kodak Picturemaker at a retail store?

Should I worry about this?

Kathy, that is a generic warning message. Basically to let everyone know that if they have a camera which supports P.I.M. that if you edit then the embedded P.I.M. data will be lost....you will no longer be able to use the P.I.M. plug in for print which came with the program.

Can someone explain to me why my PIM data keeps getting altered. I have thousands of digital prints that I've imported into Elements 3.0. I am finding that dozens of my files are losing their P.I.M. data. The Print Image Matching status is no longer available. I am trying to figure out why this is happening to some of my photos and not to others. So far the only connection I can find is that some of the photos have data being written under the IPTC field in the metadata section while others do not. The data being written to the IPTC field is keywords (tags) and description data (captions) that I've added. It seems the photos that are no longer able to do P.I.M. also have data written to the IPTC field. Could this be a bug? I have not edited these images only added tags and on some of them captions. I have seen some of my photos with both tags added and captions but one will have the extra data added to the IPTC field while the other will not? Again, the one without data in the IPTC field will still allow me to use P.I.M. while the other with IPTC data will not.

What is happening here? I am afraid to add further tags or captions since I do not want my master files to lose their P.I.M. capability (I have a high end Epson printer so P.I.M. is important to me).

Can you elaborate, what am I actually loosing? What does PIM do for me? Is this used just to print exactly the way the camera took the shot, if I'm playing with the colors in PS it won't print the way the camera took the photo anyway. Please help. It's a little confusing.

ngarbe, here is a link to the P.I.M. site and it gives you an idea of what's available to you. I do not have a P.I.M. enabled camera but I do have a P.I.M. enabled printer. I had read in documention that if you are going to use the pim camera/printer options then don't edit your images. If you don't own a P.I.M. enabled Photo printer then there is no point in using the option...go ahead and edit away. If you do have a P.I.M. enabled camera and printer then I would certainly test it out straight from camera to printer before editing. Anyways, here's the link. Thanks! I think I get the idea. I'll do a few tests. Both my camera and printer support P.I.M. I'll also check out the web site.

As for EXIF data, from what I understand that is just the META info, has no effect on color, am I correct?

ngarbe, what camera do you have ? I'd like to look it up. EXIF info is basically like a birth certificate to your images. I'm not sure about what kind of exif info is in PIM enabled cameras. Again, I think it would be best to edit on a copy of the original as to not lose any data.

I'm using a Nikon D70.

Ok heres what I see, or learned.

When you go to print directly from the organizer, there is a button for "EXIFPrint", which I can select, and a button for PRINT Imaging Matching which is greyed out, does this mean my D70 doesn't support PIM? Also, there is a button next to the select printer button, it brings me directy to printer preferencees, I believe this is the Easy Print feature on my Epson??

Now, when I take the photo to Editor, I get that message that started this thread..."your data will be altered if photos are edited..." 1st question, Does this mean I need to actually do some editing, or mearly by going into editor the data will be altered.

2nd, that Easy Print button is no longer there,

Finally, which I think answers my own question, I don't see the EXIF or PIM button anymore when I go to print. Is this the way it's supposed to work? Are these buttons not there becasue I'm in editing and the "data is altered"? Sorry about all the questions. Just trying to understand.

ngarbe, well I wasn't able to locate your camera in the P.I.M. enabled list of cameras...but that doesn't mean it isn't...I just wasn't able to locate it. Because I do not have a P.I.M. camera I'm not that familiar with the process. Seems having P.I.M. images would open up more options that aren't listed for me here.
