Question about new aluminum iMacs
I am in the market for a new Mac... the 512mb Ram just isn't cutting it. I briefly played with the 24" iMac at the Apple Store yesterday. Then I read on one of the Mac forums that many folks are bothered by an inconsistency of color on these new iMacs... apparently they claim there is a gradient-like drop off in color from one side to the other. I didn't notice it, but then I wasn't looking for it.
Does anyone have one of these yummy new machines, and, if so, have you noticed a problem with color? Thanks! Joan

Some had bad video cards
Greetings Joan!
I write for Macworld Magazine, and have indeed heard of some iMacs having bad video cards. If you happened to end up with one, Apple would replace it under warranty, free of charge. They are beautiful and fantastic machines! I think you'll be very pleased with it.

Hi
I just received that past weekend a new iMac 20 inch 2.4. I absolutely love it and I never used one before. The screen is gorgeous!! I had one black stuck pixel on the LCD and returned it the next day. They looked at it and happily replaced it with another. They were wonderful in the Apple store. I noticed if I am way off to the side the colors do look different but then I would have no reason to be looking at it from that angle. I have not one complaint-the screen is beautiful--you will love it! I just wish I had one sooner.

Thanks to all of you for your reassuring posts.. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks and plan to buy the iMac when I return.

Joan, check out the prices at MacMall. (1-800-622-6255)
I purchased my iMac 20" 2GB from MacMall last November for $1,144.00. It sells for 1,199.00 but they have a $50.00 rebate and free shipping. I also got a free Epson all-in-one printer with free shipping. It came with tiger OS but I was allowed to buy Leopard for $10.00 I think they are shipping with Leopard noq, but you can ask if the still have any with Tiger, which will give you 2 operating systems which may accommodate some of your older apps. |

Joan, Parallels will allow you to run windows. I don't know whether it includes the OS. Why not call MacMall and ask them.
As far as memory, I just purchased 2GB for $60.00 based on the question I posted on the Apple discussions site. http://discussions.apple.com/thread....8476&tstart=30 Read Kappy's answer, he is a very knowledgeable mac user. hope this helps. |

Parallels does not include a copy of Windows, so that must be purchased separately.
As far as RAM, if there's a possibility you can install it yourself (and I have no idea how easy/hard it is on that particular model) the following site is a fantastic resource. RamSeeker.com It's an aggregator that rounds up all the best prices on memory across the web. Apple's memory prices are usually much higher than what you'd pay anywhere else.

I'm not a Mac user so, I will defer to the others here but, I do have one suggestion...buy as much RAM as your computer can hold and/or you can afford! Photoshop is a RAM hog and if you are running any other applications at the same time, it really eats up your RAM.
