creating a poster size photo...question

I just got a 20x30 poster print back from Ofoto that is absolutely beautiful. (taken with a Nikon D70 on Jpg, Large, Fine) The original was about 10x7 (3008x2000) at 300 ppi, 2.31 mb.

I wasn't sure if I needed to, but since I had the instructions I went ahead and used the "increase by 10% rule" to make it a little over 30x20 (9439x6278) (12.5 mb) before sending to Ofoto. (cable modem luckily)

The poster came back with a little tip sheet that says minimum resolution for a poster that size is 1600x1200.

So the question....
Did I need to resize it or just send them the original? Did I help it to resize it? I wish I could afford to do it both ways and compare. Just curious what you people think. Thanks!

Wow, that question goes way back!
I think it was decided that as long as I started with what they recommended for resolution they would do the increasing necessary to make it work. If I ever print poster size again I will probably just send them the biggest original size I have and let them take it from there.

Yeah, I know it was an "oldie." I did a search on the 10% Rule and found it. I have just been thinking about doing up a poster, and wondered . . . Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll go for it! :-)

Funny....I've been away from the forum for awhile and was just getting back today. I too want to do a poster. I'd like to set it up to look like a large contact sheet featuring multiple images finished size maybe 20x30 also.

Is there a lesson plan somewhere or has anyone else done a poster of this type?
