EXIF Data Gone

As I have been uploading a few pics to pbase.com to see how I like it, I have noticed that I get no display of EXIF data eventhough I have it selected to display with the image. I also read that some photo-editing programs will strip away the EXIF data when certain edits are made, such as resizing or re-compressing for web use. Does any one know if Elements2 does this? Or is there some setting that will retain the EXIF data in the files I upload to pbase.com. Thanks

yes using the 'save for web' command strips all data bloat.

Use the save as 'jpeg' command instead.

Thanks Jodi. Will I still be able to edit the image and file size (reduce) for better uploadability? Where does one alter the file size (ie JPEG compression/quality)?

When you do "Save as" ... you should then be able to select the compression size.

Wendy.... I'm not seeing anyplace to change compression level in the Save-As dialog box. The only place I know of to do it in PSE2 is in the Save-for-Web dialog box. What am I missing?

Banjo, the dialogue box with jpeg settings come up only after you choose jpeg from the 'save as' and click OK..or 'save''whatever it is.

Thanks Jodi.... now I get the picture!! Of course I've seen that dialog box before, but never monkeyed with that file-size slider before. So then.... if I do an Image/resize/image size, and then a Save As (JPEG) with an adjustment of the compression, the file will retain its EXIF data when uploaded to pbase.com :?: ... I'll have to give it a try tomorrow. Thanks again.

Folks, even "save-as" seems to strip out some of my exif info. For example, after save-as, I no longer have the lens info. Before it shows 75-300mm@120mm, now it show 120mm@120mm. In addition, I also lose the exposure type for the camera, ie, shutter-priority or aperture-priority, autofocus mode, and white-balance. I'm not sure why this is happening. Is my 10D exif not standard? Thanks for the help; this has been driving me crazy so far. Actually, for some reason, all this information is read correctly when I first open the file so I guess it is standard after all. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Adam, I have a 10D also, and yes, I also see that much of the EXIF data is stripped going from RAW to PSD or other formats. I've suspected for a couple years that Canon EXIF was non-standard, but never have researched it. Fortunately, the original data stays with the RAW image, so at least it can be accessed with the Canon software or BreezeBrowser.

Thanks for confirming that I'm not missing something trivial to preserve my exif data. My routine nowadays is similar to yours in that I access the original to read the full info. If I feel extra diligent, I go as far as overwriting the Adobe-changed exif info with that of the original source, using BreezeBrowser. It's not that big of a deal but I find the extra steps a little annoying at times. I use breezebrowser a lot actually, since I absolutely love the HTML page creation. I guess we'll keep doing that until someone figures out how to preserve all the data. I'll post back here if I find anything useful. Thanks for responding!
