Sheer filter

Hi,
As anyone any idea where I can find a tut that explains how to use the sheer filter. I'm not a subscriber (yet) so I'm afraid it will have to come off some web page.
Thanks in advance.
Kev.

Hi Kev,

The Shear filter is a lot easier to use than you think. Try this out:

Create a new image File>New>Blank file make it 8 x 10 inches 300 resolution RGB and a white background.
Now make a new layer above the background layer and set your foreground colour to red.
Get the rectangular marquee and make a long thin horizontal section and fill it with red.

Now lets play with the Shear Tool
First thing is it will only work vertically so lets rotate the red box
Image>Rotate>Layer 90% left
Now lets sheer
Filter>Distort>Shear ... when the box pops up do this (A)
Click OK and look at your Image (B)
Undo the sheer you did and lets try something more complicated
Filter>Distort>Sheer ... when the box pops up do this (C)
Click OK and look at your Image (D)
Then all you have to do is rotate it back into place.

Two things to remember ...
the thing you want to sheer must be on its own layer
and it only works vertically

EDIT ... Here is a little more information about how to make a gentle curve and use it for the filmstrip in the filmstrip tutorial:

To get a gentle curve when using the Shear Filter ....

Open a new file and make it quite a lot larger than your filmstrip
Move your filmstrip into the new file and put it upright (A)
Now make the "line" in the Shear Filter look like this (B)
Your film strip will then come out like (C)
Just move that into your image and rotate it (D)

Hope this helps
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
Once again you have come to my rescue.
I now have the basics of how the shear filter works. it is now just a question of practice.
Thanks very much.
Kev.

Hi there,

When you do Filter>Distort ... Sheer should be between Ripple & Spherize.

What does yours say?

Wendy

Hi,

Well that is strange ... When I go the the filter menu at the top of the page and click on distort I get a series of types:

Diffuse glow
Displace
Glass
Liquify
Ocean Ripple
Pinch
Polar Co-ordinates
Ripple
Shear
Spherize
Twirl
Wave
Zig Zag

I gather that you don't get the same ... what does your say?

One thought is that it may be worth trying a delete of the prefs file ... when strange things happen in Elements that is always a good place to start:

To do that close down Elements then click on the start up icon and quickly hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys (If you are a Mac user Apple, Alt and Shift). Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes.
