My second restoration!

Here's the torn up photo of my sis-in-law's parents. She said it's the only photo she has of them together...I don't know the history. (Yet) She said she would be satisfied if I could just put it back together so she would be able to tell who it is. I hope I went a little beyond her expectations! My DH says she's going to cry when she sees it!

I didn't dig very deep into the toolbox for this one because I'm still not sure of what I'm doing. Books help, but I think I need video instruction. I haven't done anything to enhance the contrast, etc. yet because I'm just satisfied now to have it pieced back together! It's still a work in progress...lot's of room to improve on it. I hope I never see another plaid suit or pinstripe jacket! I also didn't crop and straighten because because this photo has a strange aspect ratio. It doesn't fit any of the standard size frames so i'd like for her to come show me how she's like to crop it. I really don't think it was a fininshed photo from the studio. I think it was a proof?

Janet,

You've done a really good job on that. I can't see the joins. Your s-i-l is going to be delighted. Well done.

Thanks, everyone! I couldn't have done it without you! I haven't shown it to her yet, but I'm really looking forward to it.

Butch, you and Wendy are planting some interesting ideas. The big problem is that if I were charging for that restoration she'd have to take out a loan...I'm too embarrassed to say how many hours that took. If I could learn all the "tricks of the trade" and speed up the process I'd absolutely LOVE to spend my retirement doing restorations!

So, how does one go about becoming proficient at this stuff? Are most people "self" taught by reading books, joining forums, on-line training, or the classes and tutorials here? I spent a few hours searching the net for local schools or colleges that have classes but haven't seen anything. I would like to just focus on restortion of old photos. I'd really like some face-to-face instruction with serious feedback and crtitcism. I think I'll start a separate thread about this...

Hey Butch...why did you drop the Calamity part of my name! Bad for business?
