Default Windows picture viewer

Just installed PSE 3.0 . Wondering if anybody knows how to shut off Photoshop as the default windows picture viewer. (When double clicking a thumbnail in windows....it starts Photoshop.) I know I'm going to love the package eventually but if I have to wait for it to load everytime I want a full screen "peak" at a photo..I'll go crazy.

Simply open elements and edit your preferences under Edit>File associations. Select the image type you want to automatically open elements when you click on it and deselect the ones you don't.

As far as I can tell, a Photoshop PSD file can only be opened by Photoshop (I use Elements-2). In the Windows photo viewer, the PSD files display a shrunken down thumbnail, but will not open to full size. If I uncheck the file association between PS and the PSD files, I then get no thumbnail at all, and still no full-sized view. I like to keep a file in PSD while I am working on it, and only convert to JPEG as a final step....this to avoid the data loss of multiple savings in JPEG format.

PSD file type

Double clicking on any file will open the appl program that it's file type (suffix) has been associated with. If you associate a PSD file with PhotoShop, or PhotoShop Elements, that program will be started when you double click on the file. Windows Photo & Fax viewer, or the Photo Ed bundled in Office, do not support PSD files, so they can't handle PSD files. If you don't associate any program with the PSD suffix, windows will cough and say it doesn't know how to open that file type. PSD files can have multiple layers which can be manipulated individually, so it is not just a flat image like JPG's or GIF, or PNG files that Windows and other basic image viewers can render.

Jeff,

Close down Elements .... go to one of your folders and find a jpg. Single click on it, hold down the Apple key and press I at the same time. You will get a pop up Info box ... part way down it says open with ... click on it and you can change the default to your own choice. Then click on Change All ....

You will need to change tiffs etc the same way if you want to change the default for them too.

So, if I deselect jpeg in the file association manager, will be able to open a jpeg in PSE3 if I want to or will it take away my ability to do that altogether?

Leslie,

If you are running XP, you can right click on an image, select "Open With" and then choose a program to open the image. Providing that you don't check the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" box it won't change any of the file associations.

Leslie, you'll also be able to open your JPEGs and any other supported format within PSE3, using File>Open and pointing at the proper folder and file. The file association only determines what program opens an image file when you double-click on it in its folder or an e-mail.
