Display Photoshop psd Thumbnails In Windows
If you have Windows it is likely that you can't view thumbnails of images in Photoshop's psd format.
A simple remedy is available for this problem, which involves installing the dll file missing from PSE3 and running a small, safe registry edit routine. EDITED 1 NOVEMBER 2005... The link to the original source of the files no longer works... If you would like these files please send me an email or pm. Mike |

Thanks! It worked well for me. Only a little precision: to get back the psd thumbnail (Window XP), right click on the black thumbnail and then click on "Refresh Thumbnail".

Thanks
Thanks Mike. I can now get rid of the black holes in my Windows Explorer folders.
I use the Organizer mostly, but I do look for some things the long way. Make sure if you have a psicon.dll in your Shell folder that you replace it with the newer downloaded version or the Reg change script will not work. Is there any way to choose all the black holes w/o Ctrl clicking each one? Selecting in batches and then choosing "refresh thumbnail' works.

I didn't have to do a refresh -- it simply worked so it may take some time to get it all together.

yes the file was removed from pe3 and CS versions due to a bug in the system with Explorer which could cause you to lose files. Adobe made the decision to remove the file. I had never lost the file as it was already installed with ps7...i had never lost my thumbnail view. I don't think I have lost any files but who knows..not like I go looking everyday. By the way...I did my weekly Norton scan and it appears I have over 250 thousand files that Norton chooses to scan...is this average ? High, low ? Curious.

Jodi,
for Norton scan--sounds like about the same as mine...

Mike's reg fix works, but...
Thanks to Mike for sending me the reg fix.
![]() The thumbnails for PSDs now display in Windows Explorer, but has anyone figured out a way to get the PSD files to display in the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"? ("Preview" in the context menus of JPGs, BMPs, etc..) Thanks! |

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is pretty limited in the file formats it can handle but there is plenty of freeware around that will replace it for previewing. XnView for example handles an amazing 400 or so formats.
