Lesson 7 ?'s

Well, I made it through lessons 4,5, 6 without questions.

I have two questions from lesson 7:

1) I have been downloading and using Scott's images for the lessons so I'm sure I'm following along ok. I did fine, except for the end when we looked at the mask layer, his showed the colored in portion was white. Mine showed gray. It also appeared as if his colored in brighter than mine did - but perhaps that was my imagination. I checked the opacity and it was 100%. I re-set my white and black. Anyone know why my mask would show gray and his white? Does it make any difference?

2) I want to learn short-cuts but I learn better by first learning what the steps are and then I switch to shortcuts so that if I forgot the shortcut I still know what the steps are. What are the actual steps for the alt/backspace that turns the mask black?

Thanks for all your patience while I keep asking questions. This has been by far the best training I've experienced so far and so worthwhile!

Hi Slo,

I'm a bit stuck on this one as I haven't got access to the training yet ... but I think that I may have downloaded the PDF. I will try and find it and come back to you.

Hopefully, in the meantime, someone else may be able to help

Hi Slo,

It this the one about adding green to the trees?

Right then .. Alt/delete just fills the area with the foreground colour.

If we are looking at the same tutorial then you are painting in white on the black layer mask and the problem seems to be that your white looks grey. If you are using a soft brush then it may take more than one sweep across it to make the white totally solid white. That may also explain why your trees are not as coloured. Try painting over the area again and see if it makes any difference.

Hopefully they will sort out my access to the training soon and then I may be able to see a little more from the video ... sorry I can't be of more help

Thanks Wendy -

I'm sorry you didn't have access to the training yet - I should feel lucky then.

You were correct with which training it is - selecting and brightening the trees.

I think late last night I figured it out. I had checked luminosity in one place (on the pic on the pallet) but perhaps not on the top of the pic.

I figured this out when I was trying to do the same thing to another photo and I was having a challenge getting the changes to show through I then noticed the luminosity at the top of the pic was only 56%. When I changed that it worked much better.

Thus, I just tried lesson 7 again and it worked just like it was supposed to.

I greatly appreciate your assistance with this. Maybe this will help someone else who might make the same mistake as I.

Enjoy your day,

Slo

Hi Slo,

Well that is good news ... sometimes its the simplest things that cause all the problems.

Glad that you have managed to solve it.

Hopefully I will have access again soon ....

Yes, thanks Wendy.

This is why I am trying to follow Scott's steps exactly and using his photos to work on to compare on screen as I go through the tutorial.

Maybe if he reads this he can add it to his instructions for future versions.

I have learned sooo much in the lessons so far.

Hi Slo,

I keep encouraging people to take the classes as I do think they are a brilliant way to learn ... they really are proving so worthwhile and I am picking up quite a few new things. Before the crash we started a thread about ideas for future classes and people posted their suggestions. I think it would be a good idea to start another one.

Can't wait to start doing them again
