"Define pattern" dimmed out

I have a photo and I want to copy a texture from one spot on the image to another place on the photo. I was instructed to select the rectangular marquee tool to select the area I want, then go to Edit -> Define Pattern, and proceed from there. However, when I go to check Define Pattern, it's dimmed out. I can't go any further. I'm also not sure which tool is the best one to use - clone stamp or pattern stamp. Any suggestions?

Tricon7, Welcome to the forum.
After you select your area, go to Selection> Inverse, then hit delete. Then selection> inverse again. Now your pattern area should be selected, now go to edit> define pattern and it should be bold not dimmed

Hi ...

... and welcome to the forum

You should be able to define a pattern simply by using the rectangular marquee to make a selection and then do Edit>Define pattern.

Are you sure that you used the Rectangular Marquee and not the Rectangular tool ?? or maybe the Rectangular Marquee had a feather set ??

Just try again ... Open any jpg, get the rectangular marquee (its near the top of the tool bar) look at the top of the screen and make sure that the feather is set to zero then drag the marquee out on the image the and do Edit>Define pattern from Selection.

Do let us know how you go on

Wendy
