Copying Slides

Has anyone used a Photosolve Extend A Slide to digitize slides? I am looking for a way to copy about 1000 slides I have and using a flat bed scanner just doesn't do the trick at least in a timely manner.. It looks like it should work but I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with this device before I shell out about $125.. A dedicated slide scanner seems to be a lot more expensive.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Hi Tom, Never used that set up. But I am using a Epson flatbed scanner Model 4180 Perfection Photo. This scanner does a super job on slides. It does take time but I am satisfied with the results. Because of the time it takes I have been thinking of buying a Nikon slide scanner ( Big Bucks) and then when done using it sell it on the Nikonians Site. I have seen used one for sale there but never had luck in seeing it fast enough as it sold on the same day posted. I have bought and sold things before on that site.
I'll try and track down some other set ups that were more economical and friendlier to use then the set up you posted. There were others here on this site with the same problem. Maybe do a search. Here is a good link on the subject.

Tom, you're wasting your time with that Photosolve.
As Eddie suggests get a flatbed scanner that can scan slides and you will also be equipped to scan reflective media.
Or, do a search for scanner service and have them done at a professional level. Some of the prices are extremely low. You may even be able to negotiate a lower price for that many scans.

I've used and recommend the Photosolve for a low-rez first pass. My workflow assumes you don't have 1000 keepers. You first low-rez scan everything with a Photosolve to avoid culling 1000 slides. Once you have all the low rez scans, you can quickly find the keepers and take them into a local camera store for high-rez scans. You also have all the others as low rez scans in case Aunt Ruthie wants a specific snapshot without any redeeming artistic value but is the only remaining photo of Uncle Ernie.

In my opinion, it's a waste of time, money and effort to buy a high-rez scanner for a measly 1000 slides unless you're still shooting slides.

Tom, one important suggestion before scanning slides is to clean them well.
This will save you tons of time deleting the dust specs.

Copying Slides

It all depends on what your end usage is. If youre "copying" the work to hang on your wall, then it isnt infringement. If youre copying it to use in an ad campaign, it likely is. Theres a whoooooooole lot of gray area in between as well.

About five years ago, I bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III scanner. I have scanned probably 250 color slides and numerous 35mm negs with superior results. The pictures I have had printed range from 8x10 to 16x20 and are hanging all over my home. Expensive, yes. Slow, yes (5 min for four slides). Quality, excellent @2800 dpi. I suggest that you try Ebay to see if you can get a quality unit for less money. Being retired, I have time to play around till I'm satisfied. Maybe I'm missing something, but I have never seen a flatbed scanner produce comparable results.

Slide Scanner

I have a PowerSlide 3650 from Pacific imaging that I have used for over 10,000 slides. Great investment for my business. Check it out.
