Glad the reset worked as well. As to why it happened, my hunch is that the tempalate was created using the full version of Photoshop, which has many more options for controlling type. The creator of the template may have used some of those options to set the type appearance, and, in Elements, those options also got switched, but with no visible way of switching or manipulating them, as you have in Photoshop. So, of course, a good way to deal with that is to reset.
