Using Organizer for Scrapbooking

I have a MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard). I would like to use the Organizer (PSE 9) to organize my scrapbooking items but I don't want to bog it down with a lot of stuff and see that colored spinning wheel all the time.

So my question is - - If I would put all my scrapbooking items into the Organizer; tag them; and then "move" them (from within the Organizer) onto my external hard drive - - the full-resolution items would not be in the Organizer anymore - - it would just be a "snapshot". Is that correct?

Would these "snapshots" take up much space?

Organizer is a catalog that has thumbnails of your items and internally has a pointer to the actually item. Even if you move the item to an EHD the pointer will still point to it. You never actually open the item until you click on the thumbnail.

That said, I have found that Organizer is pretty good until the 10000-15000 item range then it may slow down some. I find loading it is what takes the most time.
Also, as your primary disk gets fuller and fuller the entire computer tends to slow down.

The reason you put your items on an EHD is to save disk space on your primary computer disk.

Some suggestions:
1) Create a separate catalog just for your scrapbooking items
2) If space on your primary drive is critical put the scrapbooking items on an EHD
