OK So I can't access the date with year first and day last. Can I Batch process rename, to insert the date, but keep the original camera generated number?
06_05_31 (camera number here).RAF ?
We will not be beaten, except in the world cup

Chris-I think I follow what you want to do, but there may be some gotchas.
Assume current camera number is Img_100.RAF
You want file name to be: 06_05_31Img_100.RAF, correct?
The Process Multiple Files has two boxes about midway down. Instead of using one of the drop down selections, type in 06_05_31 in the left box. Use Document Name in the right box.
As always, a test with non-critical files is a good idea.
The problem would be if you had multiple dates. You would need to select each group seperately, which could be a pain. If an exact date is not critical, say you took a weekend trip and labeled everything as of that Sunday, this might work.
This works in Version 3, but I don't think Version 4 is different.
If this is not what you wanted, I hope I have not clouded the isssue.

I'll give it a try, we are on the same wavelength. There will be a few files, but after the initial sort through, each shoot would be the same date. I was hoping to batch name change then batch import to the "final destination" folder.
I use a 30GB back up HDD "in the field" that reads my xD cards, and stores them. However it isn't a card, so PSE3 reads it as a HDD, so they can be batched while on the Jobo Giga-One, then moved to the final folder.
They stay on the Jobo until a back up is done. then the xD card card is cleared and so is the Jobo. this means the photos are always on two media.

Just out of curiosity, why do you have to have the date in the file name. You can very easily during download or using the Organizer "move" command put the images into folders using the date in the name eg "06-05-31 Grand Canyon." You already have the date in the date field of the file itself. At least in Windows XP you can view in Explorer not only the file creation/modification date but also the picture taken date that is drawn from the pictures' metadata. Explorer will also sort your folders by date either by date created or if the date is in the folder name. You can also sort them by date taken in Organizer using the option box at the bottom left. Organizer will also sort them by folder if you choose that option, and if you do and the folders have date names you will see them all lined up by date. All this without having the date in the actual file name. Of course, if you want it there you can get it there but it seems like a lot of extra work for little extra benefit.

I keep the photos in a folder which is 4Gb in size, so it burns to one DVD. Then I start another folder. With folders nested below the main one, it isn't easy to see how near to 4Gb it is getting. If there are no sub-folders you can eaily see ( status bar) how many Gb are being taken up.
However, it gets to be a lot of photos, and naming to include the date would probably help.
This aids backing up and archiving.

I don't know if this will help or not, but you can download a small utility at the above link that adds a Folder Size Column to Windows Explorer. If it does not show up at first, you can right click the top line menu and add the column. It will tell you total folder size, including sub-folders. I've used it for about a month and have not had any problems.

Great Utility. Has lots of uses.
I'm actually using ACDSee to re-label photos. It can extract any metadata from the EXIF file you want to use. great
