View Full Version : Photo Downloader will not get Photos from card reader

I am using Windows XP and PSE4 when ever I try to use the Adobe Photo Downloader to get my photos from my card reader I always receive an error message "Files were not obtained from this Device--Adobe Photoshop Elements cannot obtain files from this device. Please ensure that the device is conneted properly or that the battery is charged and try again." I know that the card reader works because I can use the reader on another computer.
I assume that maybe I am missing or have a corrupt file but don't know which file. Should I remove my PSE4 files and reinstall the software?
Thanks

Hmmm, I can't help you, I have Windows XP and PSE4 also. I use a SanDisk ($30.) card reader and it works like a dream.

I am sure someone will be along that can help you.

You might want to check if you can open the image file on the card reader from the Elements editor (File, Open and then look for the Removable Disk Drive letter and see if you can open an image file on the card.) If that works then it does sound like a photo downloader and not a card reader/Windows issue.

Tony,
Thanks for your reply--Yes, this is the only way I can view the image files on the card reader is by going to file open in the PSE editor and then edit and save the images.

Laverne,

Can you see the card reader in My Computer? If so, is your computer able to move the files by cutting and pasting from the card reader drive to the hard drive?

The fact that you can use the reader from Editor means that Windows and the reader seem to be working properly. Next thing to try is From Organizer use File>Get Photos>From Camera or Card Reader and from the drop down box select the same drive letter that you used in the Editor. If you can see the same drive letter and when you try to Get Photos from it you get an error message that would indicate a downloader problem in which case a reinstall may well be the best thing to try.

Tony,
Thanks for the reply, however, I have tried to get photos from the Organizer-File-Get Photos-From Camera or Card Reader and still receive the same error message. Appreciate all the help.

I use a card reader and/or a hdd downloader, I never get a problem, ALTHOUGH if I don't plug these things in at the right time, i.e. BEFORE loading PSE it seems that PSE can get all moody on me and either sulk for an age and not recognise either for ages or have a teenage strop and just not bother AT ALL, which means starting all over again.

BUT I have never had PSE not recognise FILES, just not 'find' the source....

Is the computer seeing the reader as a drive. I have a situation that when I use a jobo giga_one "in the field" the computer only sees it as a hard drive. I have to get the photos from the folder/file, where it reads them, then move them to where I want them to go.
Labourious, but it works.

I am also wondering if you can view the drive directory and the list of images on the card using Windows Explorer? Can you double click on an image on the list and have it open in whatever is your default image viewer (probably PSE)? If so then it would seem the drive is working just fine.

You can also check Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and look under disk drives and storage volumes for any error messages or alerts. Don't mess with any settings in here though unless you know what your are doing. (You've been warned.)

I'm sure you want this to work right so GL, but if not a simple workaround is to copy all the files to either a temporary directory and import into PSE from there using Get, or put into the actual final folder named the way you want. If it's a subfolder under Adobe>Digital Camera and if that whole folder is designated as a "watched" folder, then when you open PSE next, it should offer you the option to go ahead and importing those images.

Hmm, I wonder if you could designate the card reader as a "watched" folder??

Hello TonyW.
A fellow user from another user group pointed me to this website and my problem is exactly the same as described above. I tried your suggestion for selecting the same drive letter that I used in the Editor, and I still get the same error message. Uninstalling the downloader seems easy, since it is listed as a separate item in the add/remove list, but how do I re-install it from the program CD? Another question is, does the downloader have its own camera specific drivers, because I never installed the software that came with my DMZ-FZ7, and it worked for a while.
Hope you still monitor this site, and hope you can help me. I am brand new to this forum.

Thanks, Guenter

Mine worked fine and I am now also getting an error message. I did unistall the downloader and reinstalled it when I added PSE5. My problem is now worse. Mine reads...

Fatal Execution Engine Error

just curious if anyone else says the same.
