Cookie Cutter tool

When I used the cookie cutter tool I duplicated my background copy as I thought it was better to work on a copy. Where the layer shows in the bottom right corner the thumbnail photo comes up showing the shape I want. However on the screen in editor the shape shows as cropped but in a square. Does anyone know why? Should I use the cookie cutter tool on the background layer? Thanks.

turn off the visibility to the bottom background layer by clicking on the eyeball icon on that layer. Now you should see the crop shape on the duplicated layer.
