When I am saving something this message comes up. "Turning off Maximize Compatibility may interfere with the use of PSD files in other applications or with future versions of Photoshop Elements". I therefore have not turned it off - but it comes up whenever I save from the Editor. Do I just cancel it every time or hit OK? Thanks anyone.

under edit>preference>saving files. This is where you have a choice to set it to either 'always', 'never' or 'ask'. The option 'always' saves all the layers along with a flattened version of the image...pretty much doubles the file size. Unless you plan on juggling your psd files into different aps that doesn't recognize layers then I suggest you set it to 'never'.

So Jodi are you saying that you should put in NEVER and it will save those pictures with layers that you are saving to work on later? Or should it be ALWAYS so you can open up something you have been working on and start from where you left off? Confusing, I get the same message that the original writer speaks about.

Yes you are safe using 'never'...it saves all your layers etc... setting to 'always' saves your layers along with a composite flattened image. This setting is used for image compatibility issues. So if you plan on juggling your psd files into different aps...like iPhoto then leave it on otherwise shut it off...no need to double the size of your files on your system if you don't have to.

meant to say...'always' ...it's basically for juggling images into different apps that wont recognize the psd layers.
