PE2 locks up while updating

Starting today, when opening PE2 I see a window that says"Updating Adobe online components from Adobe.com." An hour or more passes with nothing happening, and I can only get out of it by force-quitting. Which means that PE2 has become unusable. Has anyone run into this?

There was a previous thread (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9390&highlight=update) on this annoying problem with PSE2 - particularly annoying since there are no updates. Disconnect from the Internet and then change Preferences - Adobe Online to stop it.
