View Full Version : Viewing large files in the organizer

I was just wondering if there was a reason for large picture files with many layers to not appear in the organizer. All I see is the hourglass.
Is there a limit to the size of file the organizer can show?

Chris, what are you working with as far as RAM on your system ?
Have you defragged lately ? The program is quite intense and requires alot of resources...including good free defragged space to wiggle around in.

Chris,
How big are your files?
There are a number of things to try here...
 I have seen the hour glass twice in Organizer - the first time was when PE3 as looking for a large file that was actually deleted... Are you sure these files are connected properly in Organizer?
 The second time I saw the hour glass I cleared it by updating the thumbnail (Edit > Update Thumbnail or right click > Update Thumbnail).
 Under Editor > Edit > Preferences > Memory & Image Cache, what setting do you have in Memory Usage?

I just upgraded my PC to 1GB of RAM but the pictures still don't showup.
I will try your suggestions Mike. Thanks

Ok... let me know how you get on...
It isn't a RAM issue. It's also unlikely to be picture size - what size are these images?

One thing might be worth checking - in Preferences - under File Browser there is a setting Do Not Process Files Larger than xxxx MB
If that got set too low maybe it could cause problems. When I was having problems with Organizer and resources I tried resetting some of those things and that caused problems later.
Hope you solve that problem :) Let us know in case someone runs into something similar in the future.

I have seen the hour glass a couple times when the Organizer is trying to re-connect a thumbnail to a file. I have stopped the auto search and found them quicker myself,

Curiously I have a bunch of 60MB TIFS that initially gave problems with just hourglasses showing but now they all seem to behave normally even though I didn't do anything to fix it. I have 1G of RAM and according to that tech note I should be having hourglass problems - but I don't. Do notice the hard drive gets quite busy when I scan through them in Organizer though.

Tony,
I had the hourglass on files that were well within the Mb / RAM figures in the Tech Note...

Mike: I'm curious too. I wonder if when you set the Memory and Cache size in the Editor preferences whether that affects the Organizer. Mine is showing 559Mb as the Maximum used by Photoshop Elements which is 60% of available RAM. I was thinking I could increase this without causing problems but don't know if it has any impact on the Organizer as the two programs seem to be somewhat independent. How much RAM are you showing as being available to Elements?

Tony,
Mine is set at 50% (of 1GB)...
I read somewhere that PSE3 needs three to five times the RAM used up by open files. After that it goes to the scratch disc, but I have that set to a separate partition than XP uses.
Maybe it's a combination... where the problem can occur if you have a large image(s) open and then start Organizer...
I'm away from my main PC at present but I will do some testing later in the week...
