View Full Version : ImageShack vs Pixentral
Antonio

I think it's great that people can link to their pictures on other sites.
EG: www.pixentral.com & ImageShack.us
And, I always check out images on Pixentral. However I avoid knowingly going to ImageShack.
The Reason: Pop-Ups ... Whenever you go to imageshack they add on at least 2 pop-ups.
I do have a pop-up blocker, but just on principal I avoid pop-up sites.
Am i the only one with this quirk?

Tony,
I also get pop ups at this site. I can't think of any other site that my blocker doesn't handle but one of theirs almost always manages to get through. It has those goofy yellow characters that laugh out loud.
Anyways, it bugs me to and I have never posted an image there. I think of popups as spam and I will do almost anything to avoid a spammer.

I have used Imageshack - only because I know which address gives the thumbnail, but I'd prefer to use Pixentral because of the above reasons. Sometimes it's nice to have your thumbnail in the thread. I know this can be done with Pixentral.........can someone tell me how please?

Well I avoid Image Shack because when I get through there is always a window underneath touting some thing or another -- bugs the crap out of me. So you're not alone.
I prefer pixentral as it is a clean and efficient way of viewing photos -- even if it is hard to post a thumbnail. I kinda like the full image at least I can see it, the thumbnail is too small to appreciate the image.

I'm going to be contraian here.
Either my spam blocker knocks off the offending ads or I just don't notice them, but I prefer Imageshack for its ability to post an image back easily. (I agree with Robyn that it is possible with Pixentral, but I don't know how).
I constantly have Explorer freeze with Pixentral, to the point I have to shut down Explorer, even after waiting 10-15 minutes.

I have the same problems - sometimes Explorer shuts down without me having any say in the matter & it takes ages for images to show so I switched to Imageshack. My pop up blocker seems to deal with most things.

PS if you do a search for Pixentral problems you'll see how frustrated I was getting a few months back.

WOW - for once I have something going right. I use Pixentral with no problem at all and I actually do not find it slow. I just posted 3 photos on another thread - no problem 1,2,3. I also feel I prefer seeing the larger photo than the thumbnail. Often when I double click on a thumbnail it does not come up larger.

Pixentral and Imageshack both stink. They are slow and both have too much advertising going on.
You can have your own WEB site for less than $100/ year and post pictures with no ads and any size you want.
I guess it's just all about how much your photos mean to you.

For what it's worth (sorry, Joe), I did a little search, and on this thread, Message #10, TonyW figured out how to do the Pixentral thumbnail thing. I just tried it and it works.
It is a bit more labor intensive...

BTW, Joe, is it OK to ask who you use to host your site? You can PM me if you don't want to post here.

Mike,
I don't mind telling you. I use ReadyHosting. For the most part, they are pretty reliable.
You can find better deals than what they offer I think. I have been using them for about 2.5 years now.

I specifically don't suggest Imageshock because there is often pornogaphic advertisement and, as it's been the case before, there are teenagers on this website. Personaly, I have my own webspace (.Mac)

Ray,
I found the porn ads offending and dumped my Imageshack registration. Picentral has an occasional problem, but it's been quite a while since the last one. If I need a thumbnail, what about a link and an attachment.

Forgot to mention earlier that Image Shack doesn't do it for me, either. At times I like the thumbnail option, but was annoyed at the pop ups and questionable content.
I'll take a little extra time to do thumbs with pixentral if I need 'em.
Gary, if you'll dump 'em too, I'll send you 15--no--17 emails, just so you don't get lonely...:D

I've not used it in a while, but, I used to use www.imagevenue.com ....Image Venue. I don't remember any pop-ups there and it seemed to work okay...but, like I said that was over a year ago.

William,
Thanks. I'm just giving www.imagevenue.com (http://www.imagevenue.com) a tryout.....

No pop ups or porn, simple to use, downloaded quickly, could be a good third alternative.
Bayla
EDIT: There ARE links to porn ads. They didn't show up when I first went to the site....only when I clicked on my thumbnail.

Same here. I have never encountered a pop-up with image shack and I find them to be very fast that's why I use them most of the time :)

Hey... I think we are on to something with www.imagevenue.com. I was having all the same issues everyone has mentioned with both of the other choices above (image shack and pixentral). I wasn't overly pleased with either one. But I think imagevenue solves all issues. I've attached the before and after thumbnails of pics I took this past weekend from the Armed Forces Day parade as examples. I'm sold on imagevenue

EDITED: I am leaving this up only to serve a purpose. It does work, but what I missed earlier and as has been pointed out to me again is that when you open these up, there are links to PORN sites at the top of the windows. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS SITE! I DO NOT SUPPORT IT ANY LONGER!!!!

I use pixentral and for the most part it is pretty easy to use. The only issue I have with it is trying to make the image itself "clickable" to the larger image. It seems I was able to do it for a while, but I must be doing something wrong. I cannot seem to make it clickable anymore. I THINK I was supposed to highlight the picture itself and then insert that into the insert link option. So, until I figure what I am dong wrong, I will just post the picture and add the link. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong, I would really appreciate it!:D :o :D

I must not have clicked to page 2 of this thread :o .
I will give imagevenue a try, because I could click on your picture and get to the larger pic.
Thanks everyone!

Norm,
The only problem is, as I posted earlier, that when someone else clicks on your thumbnail he is treated to a whole barrage of links to porn at the top of the page.....far worse than Imageshack!

Edited: I just tried it again and now I see that. I am sooo sorry!!! Please do NOT use this site!!! I would not encourage this site for anyone!!!

Norm,
Don't worry, I did the same thing. It's really cheeky of them because when you first go to the site it looks very plain and simple & you think 'Great'.....it's only when you click on the thumbnails that other people post that you get all the unwanted links - don't worry Norm, no pictures just highlighted links....

I know... but it goes against everything I stand for. I may ride a motorcycle, and go by wing "animal", but I am a very strong Christian with high moral values. I just want to find something that works for everyone here and that solves our problems because I really don't like image shack myself and have not mastered pixentral with doing the thumbnail (and it obviously is causing problems for others). There's got to be a better place for us to post.

Maybe PET could offer a temporary "shelter" for anyone wishing to post a picture. Like 48 hours and picture is gone, maximum 20 pictures at all time.
With "intelligent" ads, this would be fun to watch (Wacom, Adobe, etc.)

Sorry, didn't mean to send everyone to a sight that had porn ads. Like I said, I had not used it in a while. That's somewhat of an underhanded way of making money for their site if I've ever seen one.
I post on a couple of other boards and would always just post the thumbnail instead of a direct link.
BTW, a couple of other possible options (I take no responsibitity for them:)) might be www.photobucket.com and the Kodak gallery services through Adobe. I don't know if the Kodak gallery allows linking to forums or not but maybe worth a try.

Norm:
Don't get too upset about not seeing the image shack garbage, I clicked on your picture, went there and didn't even notice it. Maybe I am just getting old. All I was interested in was seeing the picture I never waste time looking at the junk around it. Once it was brought to my attention, though, I saw it. Maybe I am just brain dead. I never have gotten pop-ups though....I wonder if my anti-spam blocker is just really good or they haven't gotten to me yet.
We know your a good guy Norm!:D

I have not tried this, but ignorance has never stopped me from being an "expert". I noticed on the video there are some square handles around the picture-perhaps you can grab and resize with them?

Ward (and Mike)... I watched the video and noticed that too. However, when I follow those steps, I don't get the same response. When I click on the "Insert Image" icon and paste the information just like the video, that information is then pasted into the message as text, but I don't get a picture. The picture doesn't actually appear until I hit "submit reply". So the steps I take from that point of the video on are slightly different. I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same "problem" or if it's just me. It's okay to say it's just me... often it is. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong if it is me. I am doing the steps exactly the same way.

Norm:
I had a ton of problems with that until just today....not to say I won't have the same problem tomorrow!:D
But, what I have done is click that bottom part on pixentral - the part between the " and " it then appears [img........whatever......img] once you paste it into the insert image box. Part of that [img........whatever......img] remains highlighted in blue right? but not the WHOLE thing right? Ok, Now go back to pixentral an highlight the web address from the BROWERS. Ctrl-C. Go back to your post. Highlight the ENTIRE [img........whatever......img]....the WHOLE thing from [ to ] Then click on insert image and paste the address you got from the pixentral web browser.
Please see if it will work for you now. My problem right up until today was that I didn't highlight the entire [img........whatever......img], and unless I did that I just got text showing up not the picture at all.
Humor me and see if this works ok? This has been one of the most frustrating things for me to be able to do on the forum! I just hope I can retain it! Hence part of my reason for writing this for you....maybe I will retain it!:D

I don't know what is so great about Pixcentral.
With Imageshack, just upload, copy the second address down.
Paste into the Post Reply box.
Or copy the address at the bottom and click the Insert Image icon.

Tom, in Post # 34, you say you have not read the entire post. In a nutshell, several users say when clicking on ImageShack, they either get many popups or bombarded with adult themed ads. Some users are looking for an alternative to posting a link that resolves this problem.

I see.
I have seen one or two popups despite having a popup blocker.
They are usually blank.
I emailed Imageshack, expressing my dissatifaction with this.
It's possible that one of their advertisers is doing this without
the knowlage of Imageshack.
Feel free to contact.

Colleen - I wish I could say that worked for me... but, I'm sorry, it didn't. It's not a matter of being able to put a thumbnail here with a link to the pic. I've been able to do that. I just don't get a visual thumbnail and the ability to resize it like in Mike's video. I have a thought... scary, I know... that I'm going to test. I'll be back later.

One can simply hotlink to Imageshack.
This is done on other image heavy forums all the time.
