When I open this dialog box the picture gets much lighter (too light). I have to either cancel or darken it up.

Is there a preset somewhere that is causing this??

Are you talking about the shadows/highlights under lighting? If so, the lighten shadows slider is at 25% by default.

Is there a way to open Shadows / hightlights without the software changing the picture automatically?

I don't see anything in either the Missing Manual or Scott Kelby's book about changing that default- maybe someone else knows?

It defaults to 25%. It's something you have to adjust for every picture anyway, so starting at 0 or 25%, it doesn't change a great deal, you'd still have to find the perfect setting for you current image.

.... my 2 cents.. :)

RayGuess my feeling is why automatically change the photo, and make me readjust. Why not just open and let me do what I want. As in many cases these settings are a matter of personal preference.
