View Full Version : Elements 4 not responding?

Hi, I'm fairly new to Adobe, and have been working with Elements 4. Thanks to many of you I have been going pretty well, but recently it seems that I have been encountering a "not responding" message and NOTHING moves! I have to use control, alt, delete to exit.
I don't seem to encounter this in other programs. I am trying to use the template tutorial but it only goes so far and then freezes. I think I have some of it saved but it is frustrating. Any ideas what might be wrong? Maybe my computer which has lots of memory?

Bobbi,
Have you tried resetting the Preferences file? Start Elements in Editor then straightaway hold down the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.

Thanks, Mike, I just tried it and held it for about a minute but nothing happened. How long should I wait for the box to appear?

Hi Bobbi ...
If the box didn't pop up then it usually means that you didn't hold down the keys quickly enough ... try holding them down with one hand before you click on the start up icon :)

Thanks, Wendy, I have just tried about 10 times but no luck. In fact most of the tries resulted in the program freezing up and I had to use cont., alt., delete to exit. I am starting it in Editor also.
I have to sign off for now but I'll be back later.
Thanks, again, Bobbi
By the way, when you responded on external hard drives, is it necessay to match up with the computer's mother board for campatibility?

Hi Bobbi ...
It is starting in the Editor that you need to do for this one ...
Try again but if not then you may have to find the pref files manually (I can't help on that one as I'm a Mac user)
Again being a Mac user I don't know if you need to match up your motherboard for external drives ... although I have never heard anyone mention that.

Bobbi,
If you can't get it to work, browse to the file in Windows Explorer. The Preferences file is called Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 Prefs.psp and is located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\4.0\Editor
Make sure PSE is closed before you delete the file.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Mike and Wendy, but I could not get past the owner part of the C file location. I could not find any owner type file? I also could not find anything in Explorer to access.
I can access the preferences in Edit in the Editor. I don't think this is the file you mean, though.
The disc I downloaded from is the one that came bundled with Premiere, which I have not installed, yet.
I am having the same problem with trying to create the cube in the latest newsletter. I just hold my breath that the program will not freeze again. I am saving after every move to try to get around this but it sure is horrendous.
