Hello, everyone. I have a photo collage I'm working on where I added a place for text in the following manner:

I selected an area of one of the layers, and used the Edit menu to Fill Selection with Color. I chose white at 50% opacity. I subsequently placed text in the new box and made many other changes.

I think now that I want that 50% white box to go away. It's not on its own layer. How can I get rid of it?

If the document is still open, look in the history palette to a point before you made that change.

It's not - and would have required many other "undos" before reaching that one.

Guess I learned a lesson about adding a layer instead, eh?? :o

Hi Val ...

Oh that is such a shame ... is it not possible to clone over the area?

Is it posible to recreate the whole layer WITHOUT the 'white box'?

If so, and if that is not too complicated it might be worthwhile doing so and just deleting the offending layer..

Or maybe my next tip should for elderly female relatives on inhaling ovoid comestibles......

Wendy is right, you may simply clone from the original picture back onto your white box.

Hmmm...cloning. Hadn't thought of that one...

However, in relooking at the entire project, I think I want it to be a "do over" anyway. I don't like the hard edges on the blends. What's the best way to get rid of those? I'm opening the original pix, making a selection, feathering it, selecting the inverse and deleting, then dragging the image into my base collage. Is there a better way?

Here's what I have...

Any suggestions?

Val ...

You probably need to change the feather to a higher one to get rid of the hard edges ... but I think that the best way to blend images together is to use a layer mask.

There are a few sets of tools that have Layer Masks included .. so if you don't already have a set then you can download a free one from Grant's site:

http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/index.html

I did a mini tut on how to blend a couple of images together ... its now in the Subscribers area, Tutorials Section and its called "Blending Two Images together using a Lauer Mask" ... that may help you :)

Hi, Wendy. Congrats on getting all your tuts in the Subscriber's section! Very cool!

I downloaded the directions and am printing the directions for installing Grant's tools. Does the abbreviated version (for PSE4 - Windows) include the layer masks? Or will I have to "fake it" with an adjustment layer?

Replying to myself-YES- the layer masks are in the abbreviated tools.

I'll play around, post questions if (should I say...WHEN??...) they arise, and share the results.

Thanks, everyone!

Hi Val ...

The tut moved a couple of days ago ... and its so much easier for me now. No broken link to chase :)

Now that you have Grant's tools installed try playing around with Layers Masks ... they are just are just amazing,

That tut showed you how to use a gradient on the mask ... when you have tried that out experiment with using a Black to Transparent gradient with the Radial Gradient. That allows you to fine tune the edges :)
