Another two ways:
Use an existing image of a piece of wood and follow the Patterns tutorial in the subscriber area...
Or use the Fibers filter and Color Burn layer mode... :)

And yet another one:
Fill your image with brown
Add noise .. (quite a lot, uniform, monochromatic)
Motion blur ... highish setting and 0 degree angle
Levels to adjust the streaky effect
Then use Liquify ... warp and turbulence to wave the grain and bloat to make knots.
I did a very quick example:

Funny you should ask this. I just did an easy (and VERY realistic) tutorial on creating wood using elements for the subscriber only area. The people I've showed it to so far Love it!
We usually post new videos on Friday's but I'll see if I can get that bumped up just this once.

Just wanted to follow up on this... Yesterday, we posted a new subscriber tutorial on how to create a realistic wood texture. Check it out on the subscriber home page. Enjoy!
