I have never used PSE for text so I need some help. I am making up an announcement for my daughter. There are 14 lines of text. Whenever I try to make another line, I get another layer. Is that how it works? Also, am not sure of exact procedure to center each line. She would also like to have the text with a silver look to it. Any tutorials I can access or anyone who can help me? Can't seem to find the answer in my books but not sure where to look. How does one type a poem or a paragraph in PSE without getting myriad layers? I have a program called The Print Shop that will do this but the options for color, etc aren't there and, of course, it would involve taking the photo from program to program. Can I do what I want in PSE?

Pat,
I tend to use a layer for each line as it helps me do the layout of the page but if you just press return at the end of each line and just carry on typing then it doesn't create a new layer.
For layout ... when you click on the Type tool look at the top of the screen and you will see the text aligning (looks like little stacks of paper).
For silver text you need to use a layer style ... try Matt's Chrome download from the subscriber area or go to:
http://share.studio.adobe.com/Default.asp
(click on Photoshop ... photoshop layer styles do work in PSE)
Good luck with the project :)

pe3 has improved text alot.
select the text tool and you'll see just above screen in taskbar you can now set the leading ( space between lines ). Type in a line of text and hit enter on keyboard ( DONT use numeric enter...use keypad 'enter'...numeric enter ends and commits text ).

You know, I had a problem in PE2 and for the life of me I can't remember what I had to do to correct it. The problem is that when I hit enter my type tool goes out of edit mode and I must re-do the command and thus the new layer every time. I am going nuts trying to remember what it was I had to do to keep the type tool in edit mode. Maybe I'll try again later this morning. Otherwise I guess I can put everything on a separate layer.
When I want to do the chrome thing do I just apply the style to the layer? Sorry for the obtuseness but I just haven't used PSE for other than photo editing to this point.

Pat,
On my set up I can use the return key (one on the keyboard) and it stays in Edit mode but not if I use the enter key on the numeric keypad. I'm using a Mac so it may be different on a Windows machine.
Now to do your layer style all you do is make your text then just click on the style you want in the layer palette and it will apply it to the layer ... easy to do and you can quickly try out many different ones.
When I first got Elements I only needed it to restore my old photographs ... then I saw how people were doing other things with it and it all went on from there ... now I do more with graphics than photos.
Don't worry about getting your image right .... there is always someone around who will help. :)
