View Full Version : Deckle Edges for Photos

I would like to edge a photo in a deckle edge style like photos in the 50's. I have been watching Fabulous Photos and Pages by Linda Sattgast, in particular the Photo Edges section, but didn't see anything similar to what I want. In paper scrapbooking, I have a deckle cutter. I was thinking about scanning a photo with the deckle edge and making a frame out of it to save and use again. Of course, I'm not sure how or where to save it. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Scan your pictures in the same dimension you're going to print it (or save it). Say, you currently have a 5x7 at 300 pixels per inch, then make sure your frame is over 1500 x 2100 pixels.

Then, open your image, select all, copy, open your frame, paste the image.

Hope this helps,

Ray

There is a filter (or standalone) software item to make lots of photo borders from Auto fx software folks (they make Dreamsuite etc) and it does a great job. Not too expensive as I recall. Here is their website.

http://www.autofx.com/dreamsuite/effect_pages/photoborder.html

Here is an example from my collection.

That is an incredible photo, I am going to check out that site too. I have pics of some pink peonies that I might try it with, but my pictures aren't as clear as yours . WOW

If I am reading that site correctly the software for borders is $50. Too much for my budget. What I have done is torn a deckle edge with a deckle edge metal ruler (or you could cut with decorative scissors) then scanned the strip and used the photos of the cut strip to create a frame. I could also suggest scanning a photo from the 50's and use that by removing the inner picture and selecting and pasting into (not just paste) that now blank spot. :)

When I first started with PSE, I made up a folder called PSE Templates under "My Documents". Everytime I make something up like a frame or filmstrip or anything like that that I want to use over again, I make it up and save it in that file all by its lonesome....no picture in it. That way, I can use it over and over again.

I don't know if that is the right way to do it, but it has worked for me .....so far....:) , but I am always open to other suggestions!

Mary:

You read that right! 50 bucks! Wow, that sounds like a lot of money! I like your idea of scanning a picture in with that type of border! That being said:

Jim:

That is one beautiful picture! I esp. like the border:D My peonies are swelling right now, but haven't bloomed. I had decided today to take a picture of them swelling and then when they are all in bloom. Mine are white also Jim, I love the pink ones, but mine have never had an ant on them, don't quite know why, but I will not introduce another color for fear of all the ants!

That's just the way I do it. I also have a folder for backgrounds that I create like stripes or molten glass and such so I just open it and drag it into my projects.

Oh, good, Nancy, I am always afraid I am doing something way off base or taking the long way, or more difficult way, as I have done in the past!

Glad to know someone more experienced does it the same way!

Thanks!

The ants are supposed to be there~

The very first year we moved to this house-with a beautiful peony plant, I called my Mom in a panic because there were ants all over the buds. She told me that they work on the outer shell to break it down a little for them to bloom. I've left them alone ever since:) and I get beautiful flowers year after year.

I know they are supposed to be there, but for some reason mine don't have them and they bloom like crazy. Have no idea why, but if they can bloom without the ants, and I can bring them in the house without ending up with ants running all over my table, I am a happy camper!

When I first noticed your post, I thought you were replying to someone elses post....regarding "marching ants" :D ;) :D Funny how things have different meanings anymore!!!

Well this is the 2nd year for our Peonies -- one almost bloomed last year but didn't quite make it, so out of three plants I have two with a couple buds on them and the anticipation is getting to me. Being they are still pea size it will be a while I'm sure.

Photoshop has some frames in the Custom Shape tools which can be use to create these frames. Look in the crop shapes category, in the Custom Shape tool.

Thanks for all the input - I have been away for a few days. The website for photo borders was really neat, but I have to agree that $50 is too much. I think I will scan in an old photo and use it as a template. I also have a paper cutter with different cutting edges like deckle and Victorian. I could use those, too. The peonies are beautiful!

Just wanted to report that after trying a few things - that didn't work for me, I went back to the Forum to look at the responses. I saved the peony photo that was posted by "Clemsonjim", put white where the photo was, and saved it as a template. It appears to work very well. Thanks!!!!
