edit text in .avi

How do you edit text in a .avi clip. I received the clip from someone who does not have the original as it was deleted,

The text is probably saved as an image (or series if images, just like the video). There's not much you can do I'm afraid. However, if it's possible, you can overlay a layer with a black box and your text inside that box.

You will have to move this question to the Premiere Elements forum, though.

I second Ray's suggestion about using an overlaid block of color to hide the original text.

The text in the AVI is NOT editable.
