Am I doing this right/wrong?

Hi Everyone
I have a question regarding where to use the Shadows/Highlights slider enhancer...

Let me explain my editing procedure then I think my question will be more clear...

When I edit a photo, the first thing I do is Control+J to get a backup copy of my original (Its called Layer 1). I then create an adjustment layer for Levels, do my thing, then create another adjustment layer for Brightness/Contrast, do my thing, and lastly another adjustment layer for Hue/Saturation. If I still feel that Shadows and Highlights still need a little touching up, do I then have to make my LAYER 1 active in order for the effect to take place? When I was still in my last Adjustment layer (Hue/Sat), and I then went into Enhance/Shadows & Highlights, it didn't look like any changes were taking place. Therefore, do I need make my Layer 1 the active one? And, the same question can also be applied to when you are making changes like Unsharp Mask, that also has to be done in an active Layer 1?

Hi Ruth,

Basically yes... you need to apply things like Shadow / Highlights and filters to an active Layer, not an adustment layer.
