Magnetic lasso

Help - I'm trying to do the 3D effect. I have done it before but not for a while. I am trying with the Pen this time. The Magnetic lasso tool is driving me crazy. It keeps saying no pixels selected - then I get a bit done and the photo pops from the screen. I really do not like that tool even with the mouse. Just thought while I was typing this that I guess I could use another selection tool - to keep my sanity - right? Am I lucky or not - my husband is making dinner again tonight while I play.

If the selection tool says no pixels selected, maybe you're working on an empty layer or a part of a layer which is empty. Make sure the right layer is selected.

Personally I prefer the selection brush. The magnetic lasso is one of my least chosen options. It drives me crazy and never seems to do what I want it to.

Same here, Colleen -- on both counts. I love using the magnetic lasso since I learned how to add and subtract from the selection, and how to modify the selection to expand it a pixel or two (or 40). The helpful hints from forum members have really given me a boost using PE4!

Although I don't understand why that expand, add a pixel or two works, It does the trick....just wish I understood what some things do and how they do it, but bottom line is: It works.....do I really need to know how and why?????:confused: :D

I learned to use the lasso tools by watching a tutorial video on some other subject but now I can't remember which one it was. I'd love to share my discovery with others who struggle with the selection tools like I do but I forgot where the tutorial is and even what it was about. I do this ALL THE TIME!!! (forget where stuff is, that is...)

Does anyone know which one I watched? I am pretty sure it was recently mentioned on the New Users Forum. I know, I know...you can't read my mind and I have provided very few hints but it made the use of the magnetic lasso tool and the adding to and subtracting from the selection so clear.:confused:
