I don't know if this is an advanced question or not, but I'm having problems with the enclosed photo. I wish to write a new word in the upper left of the building to mimic the writing on the right. I can only hope to get close using an available font, but the problem is the raised lettering; I'm at loss on how to achieve this effect. Any suggestions as to the best route and blend mode to take would be appreciated. I have to go to bed now so I'll check back tomorrow and see if any of the brilliant minds can bail me out on this one. Thanks!

I should be in bed myself. Can't help you with the name of the text as all I have is what's on my computer, but I can tell you how to make your text look 3 d.
Type what you want and make a selection of the text. On a new layer fill the selection with the grey colour to match. Now pull your new layer BELOW the text layer. Get the move tool and with the arrow keys move the bottom layer down and to the side. You might need to fill in some of the corner bits so that it looks more 3 d than like a shadow. I hope you understand what I mean. If not.........I guess you will ask tomorrow and I will do a picture.
Off to bed. Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

Just a passing idea on matching the font.
Find a font that you like.
Copy the dark brick area from the left side of the building and cover the current writing on the right side of the building.
Add the words you want on the left and then rewrite the Purberry (do I remember correctly) back on the right side.
This way the fonts will match and you can use Pauline's method to add the depth.

Handy hint of the day:
Oh what fun I have just had, taking the photo, and copying and pasting and free transforming and then spending what turns out to be obviously too b****y long on tidying the word Purberry up to make it look nice and NOT obviously a copy and paste.... AND FOR WHAT, nowt, that's what.
So as I say the moral of the story is to try reading an entire post before jumping to conclusions about what a clever little boy you can be, I suppose we can be all very clever at doing things wrong... Something I have specialised in all my life.
"Nurse, the luger............. What's that?............. no just the one bullet, thank you.."

Wendy,
don't be too concerned I am feeling rather chuffed with myself, cos after two days and FINALLY resorting to reading the instructions properly I have my brand new pro version (what's pro about it can't work out... yet) 60 GB * downloader/card reader working..... After my old 40 GB 'amateur' version 'blew up' on me and rather than resorting to violence I just ordered a new 'better' one that was on special deal.
* OOh ooh apparently the capacity of the hard drive is only dependent on how big an HD I can get to fit in the case and after connecting up to other bits AND FORMAT (that was my little problem) so the sky is the limit... AND just in time to go to Stratford next weekend for Shakespeare Birthday. I was starting to panic at the thought of relying on 2 1GB SDs for a WHOLE weekend, that was never going to be nearly enough for the way I take photos....

Hi Hamlet ...
Wow that all does sound good ... so the sky is really the limit !!
I rather guessed that you were a Shakespeare fan :) ... funny thing is I now live fairly near Stratford but don't seem to get round to visting :). Its always the way when something is on your own doorstep ...
Do hope that the weather is better for the weekend than it is today ... if not then its time to buy a waterproof housing for the camera :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I used your method Pauline and came a lot closer to what I want; I used color dodge on the second layer and the hard light blend on the top and got the shading down. Now I need to work on the perspective and fine tuning the font but you steered me in the right direction and I appreciate the help.

Geez Steven, that reminds me........uh you need to shade and highlight those letters with dodge and burn. Glad you thought of it on your own!!

You really should try it one year... Never let it be said that Stratford Upon Avon doesn't know what side it's bread is buttered on. And they make sure they pay due reverence to the birthday of the entire towns benefactor.... You'd be surprised who you bump into as well.
