I remember a thread about making English tea can labels, but can't seem to find it with the search engine. Does anyone else find the "search" function particularly frustrating? More often than not I can't find what I'm looking for . . . but maybe it's just ME? Anyway, thanks for any help in locating the thread I'm looking for :)

Yeah, Linda, those three letter words are unsearchable. A while back someone suggested doing a different kind of search- I'll find that link and post it.
Meanwhile- I don't remember the English tea can label thing- I only remember BettyC doing the English tea can effect from a Photoshop Cafe tutorial. Is this not what you're looking for? :(

That's the thread that gave a better search workaround that you might find useful.

I think that was it! I'd still like to try finding the thread, though, because I think there was some talk about how best to do the "fade" part in Elements. I'll look under BettyC's name, and maybe come up with it. Thank you! :D

Oh, it was Gloria (gmill) who did the effect but Betty who found the link for me originally.

It wasn't me --it was Gloria who did the beautiful picture. Here's her picture:

Hi Linda,
I think that this is what you're looking for...
The English Tea Can Painting style...

I searched using just "tea can"
Often, the fewer words used, the better.

Yeah, that's the same link I found.
It's not searching on the Internet that is the problem, it's sometimes finding previous threads that we vaguely remember!

Sorry,
I'm not quite used to reading the forum yet. And missed your earlier find.

Thanks for the thread and the information. I just returned from London and have serveral pictures that would take this technique well. However I have PE 2 and PE 4. I find that at the first step I am thwarted. There is no image>Adjustments>Shadow Highlight. The second step is no problem: Filter>Stylize>Find Edges. And then, Edit>Fade Find Edges does not show. The step which says "We will now blend this image with the original to get the result" seems to suggest that a user knows how to do this, I don't and lastly, Reduce the opacity slider does not indicate where the Opacity slider is. So can some elaborate and transpose for PE 2 or PE 4. thanks, John the newbie

Hi John ...
The instructions are written for Photoshop so they need translating for Elements :) ... first thing is duplicate the layer before you start. Layer>Duplicate Layer and then do it again.
Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Shadows/Highlights (should be in PSE4 but PSE2 didn't have this command)
PSE doesn't have the fade command so instead go to the Layers Pallette, change the layer blend mode to Luminosity, reduce the opacity to around 90%
Now merge down Layer>Merge Down
Go to the Layers Palette again and change the blend more of this merged layer to Luminosity
(or Hard Light ... I prefer Hard Light) and reduce the opacity a little (try around 90%).
thats about as far as you can go using Elements ..
Hope it helps

thanks Wendy, I think I get it. I assume somewhere in here we go to Filter>styles>find edges. Is this after: Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Shadows/Highlights and before reduce opacity? I appreciate your taking the time with this. John

Hi John ..
Sorry I only put in the lines that were different to the tut.
Yes Filter>Stylize>Find Edges is the next step after Shadows/Highlights.
When you have finished do let us see your image :)

Thanks Wendy, I have been playing with this for some time now. I do have some things to show. Now I need a quick tutorial on posting pix. I believe that I cannot post directly to this site so a recommendation for a picture site is in order. Also thanks again. I was lost but now I'm found. And I like what I see. John

Hi John ...
If you are not already a member then it really is worth subscribing ... there are over 100 video tutorials in the subscriber area and its a great learning resource ... plus they tend to add new ones each Friday :) You also get the newsletter (which is more like a magazine) ... :)
Now about posting images ... you can use Pixentral.
First resize your image using "save for web"
Set the longest side to 750 pixels and click on Apply
then adjust the quality slider until the image is around 150K.
and save it with a new name.
then go to
http://www.pixentral.com/index.php
Follow the instructions on the site and then when your image is uploaded copy the URL from just above the image and paste it into a message here :)
Look forward to seeing your image ...
