Well looking at that beautiful job you did Donna, I would never know you are struggling. I'm no where close to achieving anything!! Now I must ask. Did you use the 'clone feature' or did you do it from scratch?
What video for painter did you order??

Pauline,
I actually scan in the outline, from my folkart books, and follow the instructions, from there, the painting technique is very similar, just trying to find the right brushes that give me the same effect as my normal brushes, I will get there eventually when I find out what they all do, I love the way painter allows me to blend the colours on the palette the same as I would on my normal painting, maybe this is a little tip with folkart patterns that might help you, you can buy magazines from the newsagents, the best thing is they give you a step by step guide

Oh Donna, I probably have close to 1000 painting magazines!!! Yes, that's my other hobby. Started doing it 14 years ago!! I paint primarily on wood, but have done walls, metal, children, paper............
I just don't find painter the same as using real brushes and I never did do well with the 'wet on wet' technique. I am more of a basecoat and sideload kind of person! I'll get there though.
One feature I truly appreciated in painter though was the tracing paper. I had an order to fill for Christmas and had a very small picture to work from. Using painter, I traced it, (much easier than holding it up to the window or using a projector) and then quickly planned out my colors, resized, etc. I then just printed out the outline to trace onto the saw I was painting. Worked like a charm and saved me hours of tedious work.
I think my biggest dilema is not being familiar with the tools and that of course takes practice and patience. It's so easy to fall back to the familiar elements where I now know how to do things I want to do.

I so agree with you and I too paint on traditional type, but more tole painting and side load and all the others as well, I dont confess to be brilliant, but I enjoy it, like u I think its a matter of getting used to what you and do, I have also been trialing another program called twisted brush, and that is very good, but doesnt have a blending palette and that is what drew me to painter, also I have ordered some dvd's on the training side of things, I will let you know what they are like and keep u updated, I suppose I am surprised with how little there is on the net about this program!!, have u found any of interest you?, I have googled so many different combinations, but to no avail, I would like to find lessons on that fantasy art type of painting, has anyone got any ideas as I would love to learn true digital art form..
well the coffee pot smells good talk to you soon, its nice to know of another person who is trying to do the same as I , look forward to some great trades in work

Donna, sadly what I have found on Painter has just been what they have referenced on their web site. I think that it's more like a professional community rather than hobby users like us. I do have as many books as I could find on it
The Painter IX WOW book (way over my head in the beginning and not much help for me.
Digital Character Design and Painting - again over my head
The Photoshop and Painter Artist tablet book.
Painter IX for photographers. - a better book but geared towards clone painting over photographs. A cool affect, but somehow I feel as though it's cheating. :D I need to spend more time with this book as it's the easiest so far.
I also have the manual, but a manual it is and truly boring. You have to know what you are trying to do in order to look up the reference!
I did watch 11 hours of tutorials from lynda.com, but feel like I could use another 30 hours!!
It's unfortunate that corel's web site isn't more 'beginner' user friendly.
Yes please keep me informed about the dvd's you ordered. Where were they from and who are they by?

Once again, I second Pauline's recommendation on Painter IX for Photographers. It's the book to get started, and the book if you're into turning your pictures into paintings (using Painter, of course).
Thanks Pauline, it's a super perfect addition to my personal library !
Ray
P.S. There's a even a tryout version of Painter, which I'm gonna be able to use until the real thing arrives :D :D

Pauline and Donna,
Listening to you two talk about Painter is like listening to a foreign language. Is Painter Essentials 2 the cut down version of Painter IX.....a bit like Elements and Photoshop. If so, is it a vastly cut down version and would the book you refer to Pauline by of benefit to those of us (like me) that just have Essentials 2.

Robyn,
Here's a short movie I made about Painter a few weeks ago :

You will be able to compare your version with it, but I believe that Painter Essential 2 is really different from Painter.

Robyn, I'd really have to look at essentials to see. If I have some time and remember tomorrow I'll check it out on the kids computer. If you were to get any book though, this would be the first one I would even bother with. Essentials is a cut down version of Painter IX similar to elements and pscs. I'm not sure but I think it has less capabilities than elements does when you compare the two versions against the full version.
Your best bet would be to go to lynda.com and subscribe for a month and watch the tutorials on essentials. I watched the ones for full version painter and they were excellent. Maybe now that they seem to be pushing their product more they will come out with more help for people who are not 'professionals'.
Ray as soon as you told me the kind of work you wanted to do with painter I knew that that book would be what you would like. I should start working with it again, as I only got to page 31 and got busy with other things.

Robyn (and the others),
I just uploaded a movie I made with Painter Essentials 2 (came with my Wacom, as I just discovered!).
http://homepage.mac.com/carbmac/captures/PainterEssentials063.mov
In the first part, I used a chalk brush, in clone mode, to clone the flower. In the second part, I use the same chalk brush, only I removed the cloned option (edited out of the video) and painted over the surrounding of the flower to mask with a deep green. Making the flower the centre of attraction. Finally, I played with various paper textures to show you what it is and how it's applied.
I hope you'll enjoy. It's a 9.7 MB long video.
Ray
P.S. Text will look blurry, that's my fault. I didn't think I would edit the video but later realized some parts were better left out. No sound. Sorry. Explanations are here :)

Has anyone used the Essentials 2 that came with their tablet to upgrade to full version ? In the requirements for 'Upgrading' on the Corel site it says you must have 'purchased' one of the following versions..then it lists versions including Essentials 2 ....but I didn't buy it....it came bundled...does it still qualify ? I got pissed off at Painter 8 today and I uninstalled it. It has issues with not being able to keep up with my brush strokes ... it's been pissing me off all week so I did him in ! From what I've read on the net apparently I am not alone with Painter 8 troubles...I have also read that the latest version is faster...is it ?? If it has lag problems still then I can do without this program. I don't use filters or play with making photos into paintings...i just paint from scratch....but it gets intense just the same. I don't seem to have any lag problems at all with any other of my art and photo programs. Anyways, I'd appreciate some feedback. Thanks

Thanks Ray, I was hoping someone could just mention whether or not the latest version had lag...it's one thing to play with photos but when you are doing alot of paint strokes quickly...which is how I paint there seems to be a problem after a while. I notice this in Essentials 2 as well. I plan on upgrading to a more beefy machine which would probably help me alot but I'm waiting for the new OS. I don't have this problem with any other program so I'm assuming Painter is a resource hog. I guess I just don't feel like dealing with the trial version right now..thanks again.

There's a patch for Painter 8, just in case:
ftp.corel.com
Look in the Pub folder, and navigate until you find Painter's subfolder.
I haven't received my Painter IX yet, so I can't tell if it's better or otherwise. However, I doubt that my discoveries would help you, mainly because I am on a Macintosh computer. As for Pauline, I think that she started directly with Painter IX, so I doubt, again, she would be able to tell you about perfomance enhancement.
it's one thing to play with photos but when you are doing alot of paint strokes quickly...
Well, I don't think the two are very different... Besides, I do paint as well. And I did notice a certain lag as you use the brush engine intensely. There's a procedure to reset the brushes (I don't have it at hand), maybe this would help you.
Ray
Jodi Frye
April 8th, 2006, 08:03 PM
ya, did the patch thing a while ago...no difference. Resetting brushes; it's the 'pre-built brush file' which should be deleted after every use of painter....from the program files...which i do. I don't have a problem if I'm just doing some basic brush strokes...anyways, thanks again. I suppose when i'm in a better mood I'll try the download. If it lags they lost my sale.
Pauline
April 8th, 2006, 09:04 PM
Jodi, I wish I could help you with the answer, but since I never had 8, I don't know. I haven't done enough painting yet to tell if it lags, but when I've made strokes it seems to keep up with the stroke. I would hate if I made a stroke and had to wait to see it. From all the information I've read and heard, it is much faster than 8. I guess the only thing you can do is download the trial version and see if you like it.

Ray essentials looks quite different from Painter IX. I never did check to see the kids painter program. I just assumed it was like the trial one I got with my tablet, but obviously it isn't if they have essentials. I guess I'll have to try and remember to look tomorrow. (spent about 6 hours on here working on the Friday challenge---never had lunch and at 7 realized it was well past dinner time)

I didn't have a very good week myself. This up and down and rainy weather plays havok with my head which is not nice. We could bitch together.
Let's hope next week is better for you. A good idea to wait until you are in a better mood. When you aren't and something goes wrong it just makes everything worse. I'm sure you'll love v IX.
Now it's time for my tea and curl up with Nora Roberts. (an author for those that don't know. I'm on book 3 of one of her trilogy's)

Pauline, yup, crappy weather here too which isn't helping at all ! I was in such a bad mood this morning that I uninstalled alot of stuff off my computer...stuff that i just don't use and it's wasting space ! ..Thought I'd use it mind you but never really did so off it went. Also deleted all my Outlook express so if i missed replying to anyone then...oh well, it's all gone forever now. Actually, I saved a few messages which I need to look at when I'm in a better mood ...so, my head was still with me a little bit ;) Ya I wish I could fly up there...I'd bring a couple of bottles...well, more than a couple and we could have a really good bitch/laugh at the world session for sure ! Anyways, i will keep you posted when i decide to give the new and improved Mr. Painter a whirl. I need change !

Robyn, just checked out Painter Essentials 2 on my kid's computer. It's a real cut down version of the full painter IX. Very small selection of brushes and papers, etc. You will still be able to do lots with it but it has a lot less than the full version. It's still fun to just play with though.
Jodi, maybe you need to check out Steve Caplin's Friday challenge. I spent 6 hours today working on it!! (it sure doesn't look like it!). I just got lost in my work. I think that's what you need. To just get lost in doing something you love and forget your troubles. It's a cycle. It will get better!! :D I think we are all itching for some good weather. That little tease we had in March just makes things worse.
Now I'm off to bed with my book. I told my daughter she could stay out until 1  I won't wait up though since she at a house just down the street, and her boyfriend will make sure her and her sleep over friend get in the door safely.

I too would begin with the Painter Essentials. Though it's a limited version, it's not that limited. Similar to PSE, but with a bit less fucntionality. Nothing to be worried, though, because the full version, as Pauline just said, is quite a lot to digest.

There are some classes for Painter (versions 6 through IX), and also Painter Essentials 3, and www.eclecticacademy.com (http://www.eclecticacademy.com) . I've not taken them, but I'm pleasantly impressed with the classes I've taken, and they're very affordable!

Just what sort of a program is Painter?
Pauline
April 10th, 2006, 10:31 PM
why Alice it's a paint program! :D
Seriously, it's like being in an art store and having every brush imaginable (and even those you never imaged) at your finger tips. Every kind of paper, patterns, and all different kinds of media. Chalk, ink, pastels, acrylics, water colors, and on and on it goes.
When you paint with water colors the next time you open your project the watercolors act like they're still wet. You can add the paper texture at any time and layer it by using a different kind on a different section of your painting.
You can paint like regular painting, or you can use the clone feature when you have a photograph underneath a transparency, so you can see your photo. You can use your own colors or use clone colors which take the colors directly from your photograph. The use of layers gives you endless possibilities. It's really a fantastic program. If your scroll up the message I believe it was here that Ray did a little tutorial on the clone painting.
