I really hate to complain, but what is up with Dave using that ugly, rusted kitchen sink in his two latest tutorial videos? Maybe a political comment on the sorry state of our land fills? I would prefer that he use a nice flower or sunset or maybe a person, but not a dump.

You know what "they" say . . . One man's junk is another man's treasure! ;)

Linda,
I know what you mean. Our garage and various sheds are full of Barry's "treasures"! :D :D

Robyn :D We've made too many BIG moves to be able to collect very many "treasures."

We have been in the one home for 36 years.........so you can just imagine the extent of the "treasures". It's a bit like the rings of growth on a tree. I honestly don't think Barry has any idea of what's under the top layers, but it's all too "valuable" to get rid of! :D The trouble is when we need one of these "valuable" treasures, it can never be found!:D

[QUOTE=blackdog]I really hate to complain, but ...
What I hate is that word “but”, you can never tell what’s coming.

Robyn, I can identify with the "useful junk heap". Michael was on the farm for 41 years! You know what, when you have a clearing sale, it is amazing what other people will pay for all those "treasures"

It's art, innit!!!!
It's like dead clever, what we mere mortals consider a rusty old sink, is not only a comment on our throw away society, BUT proves that real artists can see beauty in a rusty old sink, not just pretty flowers or a babies smile....
That or he couldn't be bothered to find another photo.....

Oh Wendy, you sound just like my husband. Heaven forbid he should get rid of something. Not me, if I haven't used it in six months it's gone!
Robyn, I don't know what it is with my husband, but he just hates to part with anything! Even something as simple as a nail! Sheesh! He has promised me he is going to clean out his garage this year, let's see, I think this is the 5th year he has said that:) gotta love em!

I know exactly what you mean Robyn. We've been in the same house for 22 years, and I we can hardly walk around in the basement.
I always tell our sons, "If you need something, check our basement before you go out and buy it. There's a more than excellent chance that you'll find one down there!" And I must say in more cases than I can count this has been exactly the case. (trouble is I rarely take my own advice, hence the accumuation grows)

I like Dave's Photo. With this photo he has proven to me that he is an observant person and his nature of capture goes beyond the usual 'yawn' photography that we most often see.

I agree with Jodi. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Afterall, my wife picked my ugly mug. She's sticking with this rusty bucket so I kind of have an affinity for rusty objects.

I would like to be like this!
I like this picture. Beauty can be found too in what one usually considers it ugly. All is about the way it can be shown. This picture is creative.

I like the photograph. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Just watched a video by Bryan Peterson on Macro Photography and he says he is in heaven in a junkyard for macro shots ..... all kinds of lines, textures, shapes, colours, patterns, etc. I believe it is about "Learning to See Creatively" ( Peterson's book) that makes the simple photograph an art piece. I know that I now look at things a lot differently after reading his book.

Hey Kathy
Where did you find that video? I would like to see that.
For the record - I like the sink but it would not be something I would hang on my wall ;)

Well when I saw the sink I thought............now that rusty sink could come in handy as a background, or rust effect on some creation!! I too liked it. Now that's not saying I would like it if it were in my kitchen!!!

Seriously this is what makes a better than average photgrapher in to someone who 'knows their stuff'
It may be easy and 'witty' to say he can see beauty in anything, but that someone can see the potential in a 'rusty old sink in a pile of weeds' as a good or even great photograph, or at least have to potential to use techniques and skills available in PSE, or any photographic techniques to make an interesting photographic study shows signs that whoever took the photograph does not see and think like we mere mortals.
Well I think so anyway....

Nanci,
Here's a link to the website:

Just "search" in the playlist for Byan Peterson and he has about five or so videos there.

Sherrie,
I'm with you.....I'm not a compulsive hoarder.
You talk about the 5th year a clean up has been promised.........I seem to remember Barry making that same promise over 30 years ago!:D

I am new to this forum and did look at the videos you all are discussing. As much as I like the flowers, grandkids, people photos to work with, I also think something like the old sink has so much character and can really add something of artistic element to our lives.
Just my two cents.
