are you saying you could not get the message to delete the prefs file or is it that deleting the file did not help ?

Kalub,
Are you on Windows or Macintosh? Someone could send you a fresh copy of this file, and you could, later, mark it as read only (I believe Robyn had the same problems, once..)

What I meant is that deleteing that file did not work. And I have Windows XP Ray. ^_^. I hope someone can help. I cannot live without my photoshop!

I have had that happen to a layer style.
The only solution was to delete the layer style and replace it.
That's one reason why I always have dups of all presets.

Yes Ray, I did have this problem(over and over again)......with the "Glass Buttons" file. I marked it as 'read only' and I haven't had the problem since.

Robyn, just curious. When you marked the file as 'Read only' were you able to use the Glass Button in your images? Or did this just stop the warning message from showing up?

I made every styles file a read only file .... nothing worked!! Is there anything else I can try!?
Robyn

Ward,
The file was fully functional after making it a read only. There was one other file (can't remember which one) which used to do the same thing (and I just kept replacing it). I didn't change that one to read only, but curiously, after I changed the Glass Buttons to read only, the other file never popped up with a bad styles flag again. Don't know why??

Robyn,
How did you know which file was corrupted? I cannot figure it out! Once I figure that out maybe I can replace it.

Hi Kalub ...
When exactly do you get the error message ?

Kalub,
As soon as I clicked on glass buttons in the layer palette I would get the corrupted file message.

Robyn,
Thanks for the answer. I have both Verson 2 and 3 and have replaced a corrupted styles file in 3 with the same file from 2. Next time, I'll try the Read Only tip to see what happens.

The error message pops up right away when I start up photoshop. I cannot even get the program to open because when I run it ... it starts up and in the middle of loading all the plugins and data it gives me the message... Does that help?
Robyn

I didn't get the message during the start up only when I clicked on the bad file.

Normally the file causing the trouble will be part of the "flash screen" during the start of the application. Does your application remain up long enough for you the see the file name or does it just close down rapidly?

When I start up Photoshop it begins to load. Then a message will pop up that says "This styles file is bad or corrupted." Then it will finish loading and another message will pop up that says "Application did not load correctly" And that is it .....

Try watching closely the name of the files in the splash screen as the application loads. You should see the file name beore "This styles file message" shows.
I did not see in your earlier posts if you are using Elements 3 or 4?
If you have Version 3, I'll post a weblink that has all my styles files. You could then just download them and replace all your styles files, which should correct any bad files you have.
If you have Version 4, perhaps another user will make the same offer or volunteer to send them to you.

One the splash screen it moves way to fast .. I cannot see the name of the file. But I am currently using Photoshop Elements 3.0. ^_^! So if you send me the link to these files I will just put them in my styles folder to replace the old ones?

Mike, thanks for the offer of the Version 4 files. If you see a problem with my directions, please feel free to offer any advice.
Here is the way I would do it:
Close Elements
Go to your current Styles folder and move all the files to C:\Temp (just in case everything goes south and you need these files back). Leave the folder itself where it is.
Mine is at C:\Program Files\adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\Presents\Styles
Click the site below and copy the Styles.zip file to this folder. It has 14 files in the zip file and will be easy to copy once.
http://web2.airmail.net/ward
Once the file is copied right click the zip file and select Expand Here.
You should end up with all the files-you can then erase the zip file.
Launch Elements.
Let me know if this helps.

Well I did exactly what you said and when I ran Photoshop it did the same thing it has been doing! The only thing I can think of to do is to uninstall and reinstall it. Because nothing I am trying has done anything to help. Thoughts?

Before you do a uninstall/reinstall, let's try one radical thing. Grab your whole Styles folder and move it to the C:\Temp folder. Then relaunch Elements. If you get this error, then it is something other than that folder. After that I think a reinstall might be in order. Just be sure to have all anti-virus software turned off during the reinstall. Please let us know how it comes out.

Kalub,
Before re-installing I'd recommend doing the following:
Move your old Styles file out of C:\Temp into a permanent location such as C:\My Documents. Then clean all temporary files on your PC.
Reboot the PC.
Try to start PSE far enough to delete the Preferences. To delete the Preference file, click on the Elements start up icon and then straightaway hold down the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys together. Keep holding these keys until a windows comes up asking if you want to delete Settings, select Yes.
Let us know if this helps...

Ward -- I have PSE 3 and have been watching this thread because I have one style (Image Effects) that has been giving me a "This Style is Corrupted" message for months (the message appears as soon as I select this style from the drop down menu). I have reset my preferences many times but to no avail. I just now copied your Image Effects style file into my style folder and bingo ... problem solved! I now have access to these styles (I can't wait to put some snow on an image from Texas!). I have been holding off on doing a re-install just because I get nervous with those things. BTW, when I downloaded the style file to my desktop, it downloaded as an .asl file rather than a zip file, and so I was able to copy it into my Adobe styles folder as is. Thank you so much for uploading the style files for our use.

Hi Glenn,
I've just remembered that it was Image Effects that was the other file involved in my case. I found that everytime I put a new copy of Image Effects or Glass Buttons it would be fine for a few days/weeks, but the problem kept resurfacing. It was only after I made the Glass Buttons a read only file that the problem seems (hopefully) to be fixed.........no problems now for a long time.

Glenn, glad to help. The zip file has 14 files in it and I think all end in .asl. I thought it would be easier to download one zip file, if someone needed all of the files.
Robyn, I had trouble with the Glass Buttons file also. This was the one I had to copy over from Version 2.

Ward, thanks again.
Robyn, I'll keep my fingers crossed that my Image Effects style doesn't become corrupted. Thanks for the read-only idea!

I saw a post on this forum about a error where it says something about a "Bad Style File" ....
I usually just give it a spanking and send it straight to bed with no dinner.
Looks like it's resolved? often a "bad style" is the result of a missing parameter or aditional element like a pattern or texture. Just FWIW...

I have tried everything that you have said. And I even uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does not work. I took out the styles folder and it still did it. I am at my wits end! I am at a loss for ideas!

Kalup, try this;
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\Previews\Cache>Effects Cache, Filters cache...delete 3 files that are in both folders.
By clearing the Cache, Elements upon next start up will recreate the list of available styles in the styles palette as well as the little thumbnails for the style previews...
After doing so...give the program time to reload completely to rebuild the cache file.

Have you tried using the repair wizard in the Add/remove programs instead of completely un-installing ??
kalub
April 13th, 2006, 12:52 PM
Yes! I tried that but it would not work! As soon as I tried to repair it it went to the setup where you install and all that from. It basically just went in circles!
Jodi Frye
April 13th, 2006, 01:07 PM
Well the repair does re-install the program and it will prompt you to install the disc if it finds something corrupted or missing. Did it not go that route ?

Kalub, I have been following this thread and I know it's a little
late to jump in but, If you end up reloading the entire program--
before you do I suggest you back up your images --- you must
have a lot of time and effort in them and I would not want put
them at risk...........Good Luck Tom

Everytime I try to use the repair wizard thing it tells me to insert the disk. But it is already in there. Then I open it and close it again and it says the same thing. Am I going to have to get a new photoshop?! Because I dont have the money and nothing is working on this one! I am about to go insane!

After quite a long time I had a couple of 'bad files' pop up yesterday. One was Jodi's inner glows. I've deleted and replaced these files. I don't know whether it's my imagination or not but this seems to happen with me if I've been applying a lot of different styles - undo then apply, undo and then apply etc - without too much saving of the file inbetween. It's almost like Elements says I can't cope with all this I'm going to throw a wobbly!:D

kalub,
I have the exact same problem as you. I get that dialog box every time I start up Photoshop Elements. I can't get past the startup, and mine actually hangs up, slowing everything else down unless I reboot.
I found this solution in a blog online:
NOTICE TO PSE USERS--if you use Adobe Photoshop Elements and it ever gives you an error message about the "Styles" file being "bad or corrupt". DELETE THE PREFS and ALL THE PSE marked directories in files. It is easy if you know your way around Windows. This nightmare message that does not respond to-re-installing the software has been brought to my attention and I found the fix. This problem may not be limited to PSE and may well extent to CS & CS2 as well as earlier and newer versions of PSE.
Does anyone know what he means by "PSE marked directories in files"? I'm not sure how to find these to delete them.

Does anyone know what he means by "PSE marked directories in files"? I'm not sure how to find these to delete them. Not sure what is meant by this... however I do know that a reinstall won't overwrite temporary files. To clean a Windows PC of the temp files that may relate to PSE, do this:
If you don't have a program that cleans your PC, go to Start > Search > Files and Folders. In the "All or part of file name" window type *.tmp. Then click on More Advanced Options and check the boxes next to "Search system folders", "Search hidden folders and files" and "Search sub-folders". Hit the Search button. When the search is finished, go to Edit > Select All and then delete the files. Close the Search window.
Go to the Recycle Bin and empty it of all files.
Go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\[Owner or User]\Local Settings\Temp. Delete any of the following folders and files you find there:i.. Folders - _istmp [x] .dir
ii.. Files:
_ins [x]._mp
_inst32i.ex_
_inz [x] ._mp
_isdel.exe
_istmp [x] .dir
_setup.dll
_setup.lib
_wutl [x] .dll
~ins [x] .~mp
where " [x] " is any number
Make sure you then reboot the PC.
