View Full Version : First pics from new camera

Two weeks later and I've only just got the camera out of the box.....I haven't a clue what I'm doing (haven't even read the manual), so the first photos are disappointing, not as good as I usually take with my little Panasonic FZ5...........but that is to be expected until I familiarize myself with the camera.
One thing I do know already though...........I won't be able to live without a good quality macro lens. ADVICE ON WHICH LENS WOULD BE BEST TO BUY WOULD BE APPRECIATED. I thought probably the Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM. Any comments?
Anyway, these are the first two......both photos of Barry's get well flowers. No post processing at all.....just straight out of the camera.

Robyn, so glad you have taken that camera out of the box. The photos are nice and crisp but I can see what you mean when you say you are a little disappointed. But you will improve, I have no doubt about that ;) and look forward to seeing more great photos from you.

I think the first of the two is awesome. Very crisp and colorful. Nice job. Glad to hear that you are able to have some time to focus on some fun.
By the way Robyn. Congrats on Editor's Choice!

I thought probably the Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM.

You will not go wrong with most any macro in the 90 - 105 mm range. This range is a very popular range, the competition is fierce and in the ended the consumers wins. In this range the Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is outstanding. The only way you could do better is to change to Nikon. Sorry the devil made me say that.

The depth of color is quite exceptional, I think.

They all look great to me.
Glad you finally had a chance and the peace of mind to use it.
I remember reading reviews about the lens. Top notch all around. :)

Karen,
I know why I am disappointed with my first attempts, but it's always good to get someone else's perspective on it. What aspects did you also find disappointing? Any constructive comments from anyone most welcome.....it's the only way I'll learn.:)

Yep, that's the devil, because only him could want someone to get a Nikon. People with pure intentions and good hearths have Canon.. :D :D :D
Robyn : Have a look at the Sigma lenses. Some of them are just as good as Canon, but about 15-20% less expansive. I have a 50mm macro lens from Sigma and I like it a lot! It's sharp and colourful enough. A touch of USM suffice, most of the times.

You and Karen must know something about those flowers that I don't. Which is probably the case:D .

Raaaaaay stop that I now have coffee all over my iMac.
Now tell me, seeing you have a Sigma instead of a Canon, what did you give up the good heart or the pure intentions?

Robyn, those photos look great to me! How did they fail your expectations?

Jo,
Well for starters the composition isn't great, but that's me, not the camera.
I think probably the clarity I find disappointing and that's why I say I'd like a dedicated macro lens. I really love the detail in macro photography.
But as I said, I really haven't much of a clue in what I'm doing.......I did some different settings with the aperture and shutter, but white balance and ISO speed, etc. etc. mean very little to me at this stage. And of course I've just used the Jpeg setting.....RAW is for down the track when I understand more of the basics.

Robyn, I really can't say why I know you would be disappointed  The photos are good but there is just something missing - I know I am not making a lot of sense. Somehow they appear dull. Now the coffee mugs are really very good; the depth of field is great (I like the way the ones behind are slightly out of focus); the colours are bright and crisp :)

Robyn-they're beautiful. I noticed that the photos from my Rebel are a little softer than my...ummm...Nikon, but to tell you the truth, I like them that way. I sharpen everything, but many not so much.
Grant, dear-I'm afraid Ray has made at least one die hard Canon convert-his army is growing:D
Signed,
Pure of whatever and good at something-or watever you said...:D

Robyn,
I think your first photos looked pretty good. But I know what you mean when you have the photo you want in your minds eye & when it comes out , it's not quite waht you were hoping for. I notice when I have gotten new lenses--that they are a bit tight at first especially if you are focusing by hand. But the more you get used to holding the camera & finding the right distance from the subject, the better your pics will be. Besides if they come out of the camera perfect, then what would you need PSE & us for???????:D
