View Full Version : Snapping to objects - why?

Hi,

Does PSE 4.0 have some sort of smart-snapping to objects feature, and if so can I turn it off?

As I move an object, such as drawn with the rectangle tool, it snaps to the edges and centre of other objects: which I do not want!

This only happens when moving by mouse; moving by the arrow keys does not snap.

Has anyone come across this behaviour before? Oh, and I've turned off snap to grid, which makes no difference.

many thanks,
Adrian

It is a feature. to turn it on or off go to the main menu and select "View" and then click go to the very bottom and click "Snap to Grid"

Grant,

Thanks for your reply, but I've already turned off "Snap To Grid". The object does not snap to any regular grid points, but rather snaps to align horizontally and vertically with the top/bottom/centre of other objects on the page.

Oh my!

This is a new one to me.

Just a shot in the dark but have you got one of those really new fancy mice that have lots of programable features? Just a thought.

Other than that I would start out by resetting your preference.

Adrian,
Try holding down the control key while moving your object; release the mouse key, then the control key. Sometimes it works and other times not - wierd.

Thanks Gloria, I did try it with Control, Shift, Alt - none of which help. Maybe this is some sort of bug that I have to live with. It's just annoying when trying to carefully position an object and it jumps to another point!

You may want to reset your preferences and see if this helps.

I can't seem to duplicate it with PSE4 and a mouse. I even tried turning on the snap to pixel option in the rectangle tool but that didn't seem to make it behave any differently. You might want to check that that option is turned off (click on the down arrow when the rectangle tool is selected to see the option) . You also might try resetting the tool - if wierd things are happening with a tool resetting it often fixes it.

Sometimes as I zoom close to pixel level I get the jumping around.

Lower resolution photos make it harder to move smoothly.

This is really cool, in a way, because it's one of the features of Photoshop CS 2 (the ability to snap to other objects so that your current object is aligned, top bottom left and right and center).

I would consider not doing anything and enjoying the perks ;)

The same problem was driving me bats last week after I installed PSE 4 & was trying to use the crop tool.

With some luck I found that the dialog box at the top was using "Photo Ratio". Turn it to "No Restriction" & that's it.

If you're using the Marque tool, the box called "Mode" may say Fixed Aspect Ratio. Change it to Normal.

Ray,
I also had read that this is a new feature of CS2 and you are right: it is a cool feature, but only if you want it to happen! It's a shame they didn't add an option to turn it off in Elements.

Thanks for your comment,
Adrian
