Hi gang,
I've been having problems with the speed of Photoshop 4 start-up and at closing. When I use PSE 2 I click on the icon and it goes to my editor page within seconds. But when I start up 4 it takes at least 1 minute or longer to get to the same page. When I click exit it takes at least 30 seconds to close. 2 shuts down in a nano second. What am I doing wrong??? I just upgraded my ram another 512, hoping to make it faster but it's not showing much improvement.

Hi, Randy

Are you with Window or Macintosh? How much free space does your hard drive have?

Do you have plug-ins installed (with PSE4) ? Wild guess here...

Also, when was the last time you defragmented your computer? If it's been several months, now would probably be a good time to consider doing just that.

If you have lots of fonts load time is slow, and like Ray says plug-ins like AutoFx seem to really slow the loading time.

PSE 4 takes about 18 seconds to load on my laptop
PSE 3 takes 15

I defrag and also delete cookies once a week. I do have alot of fonts, Butch I didn't know Autofx slows loading time. Would that be different on my PSE2? My PSE2 works really quick. What can I do about the fonts? Would I be able to delete some of the fonts?

Butch since you have both 3 and 4 When you download your pictures do both of them try to download? When I download both of mine come up trying to download. I sometimes do let both download if I have very important pictures that I don't want to mess up.

I disabled the downloader in preferences. Adobe does say you should not have both versions open at the same time.

With the fonts.... some font managers allow you to group and deactivate sets as needed. But I do not use a manager so I am not sure.

If I understand you ... you have both PSE2 and 4 loaded on your computer?

Just wondering if that could be the problem in some way. I have not used PSE2 and have never had it loaded, no experience there.

One minute for me would be a tad excessive.

For me the biggest bottleneck of loading Element is the amount of memory on board. On similar computer Elements 4 does load faster than version 3 but only marginally. I won't compare across platforms as this is a sort of apples and oranges thing.

On a slower computer with limited memory the load time of Elements is greatly effected by how many other programs are running, i.e. Outlook, Zone Alarm, MSN etc. All my computer carry may fonts (1200 to 2600) and for the love of me I can't see any slowdown effect from this. I generally don't use plugins so will leave that up to others to discuss.

Oh for what it is worth Elements 4 loads anywhere from 43 seconds to 9 seconds depending on which computer I am using

Hi there ...

PSE2 doesn't have the organiser ... would that make a difference ??

Wendy: I assume that he has it set for starting up in Editor. When you do that the Organizer doesn't load.

My PSE3 takes about 15 secs and PSE4 takes about 6. Most of my plug-ins are in PSE3 and I suspect that is part of the difference.

As the Editor is loading you can see on the screen what is loading when. You should be able to tell what is holding it up by watching the screen as it loads. Reading Global Resources is the slowest with my PSE3 but that is only a couple of seconds.
